The site has been using only GIF files for screenshots in entries, but Andrew was kind enough to open things up to both JPG and PNG files. This has a pretty sizable space advantage in many cases: PNG is almost always smaller than regular GIF files (unless 32-bit color is enabled) and JPG generally compresses multi-color (paintings/photographs) files better than both.
I've already gone through around 15 entries and pushed files over to PNG format and saved some bandwidth.
RIOT is great at this, by the way.

Finally! The 256 color limitations was a bigger issue in case of GIF images. Just look at some gradients on the screenshots: they look like most images back somewhere in 1995.
