So Magibon posted something about how to update this to a newer version (now we're up to v2.0.0.3 [10 Nov 2011]). Although I haven't tested it, this is a pretty cool solution and props to Magibon for figuring it out. However, average users will balk at the complexity of the process. Maybe we should contact the author and ask if we can redistribute the version that SmithTech (the dev mentioned in the post above mine) isn't maintaining. I know there was some old discussion of a JauntePE version by Andrew, and that may be a better route.

For reference, here's Magibon's instructions:
HOW TO UPDATE THIS TO V1.8.1.4:
===============================
1. Download Portable Launcher. http://usb.smithtech.us/apps/downloads/ ... rtable.exe
2. Download Xplorer2 1.8.1.4 LITE: http://zabkat.com/xplorer2_liteTB_setup.exe
3. Install v1.8.1.4, select your language, uncheck all options, becareful to not install the toolbar.
4. Choose location, install.
5. Copy & save installed files except "uninstall.exe".
6. Uninstall Xplorer2, remove left over key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ZabaraKatranemia Plc]
7. Extract Portable Launcher.
8. Delete all files in App > xplorer2_lite.
9. Paste files from Xplorer2 v1.8.1.4 in it's place.

Note:
The reason you want to use the launcher is it makes Xplorer2 stealth. If you use the official version, it adds 1 key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ZabaraKatranemia Plc
Thoughts?

Ran Magibon's system for the latest version and it seemed to work fine with a basic regshot test.

Unfortunately while testing out the program, I got a little tired of all the various different "pro-only" options in the menus. There's so many its just distracting. Additionally, apart from a really slick interface, I couldn't really see a dramatic difference or advantage over other file managers I've been testing.

There's news about xplorer² free version which might justify a second look...
http://zabkat.com/ wrote:xplorer² free v2.5 is released, including all the latest fixes and full windows explorer replacement features of the professional version.

For xplorer² version comparison matrix, see http://zabkat.com/comparison.htm; download from http://zabkat.com/x2lite.htm.

Another motive could be the inclusion of editor², posted about at viewtopic.php?p=63002#p63002 ...

xplorer2 Lite v3.4.0.2 released, dated 2017-06-22 (changes at http://netez.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=11476).

:!: Incidentally, non-western scripts users of Xplorer2 Lite could be faced with an annoying filename limitation -- for more info and possible solutions, check http://www.zabkat.com/blog/16May10-ques ... enames.htm.

Have registered the "normal" and "pro ultimate" versions a few years ago.
Dropped both when a "WD Passport" 500Gb external USB HDD died while i was moving huge files around on same partition.
Now, i can't blame xplorer2 with certainty. It may have been a defective unit from Western Digital.
Tried very hard to recover this USB HDD with specialised tools, but the drive geometry was broken...
Today, i use either "Altap Salamander" or "SpeedCommander".
And i won't buy "Western Digital" products anymore. Ever. Again.

I have a 1TB WD My Passport that the same thing happened too. I had it sitting around for like 2 years and occasionally tried to get it working with no luck. Then one day I installed LXLE 12.04 or so (A Lubuntu based distro) on an old laptop. I decided to give "testdisk" a try and after some effort, I got a working drive again. At first it didn't see it but after starting testdisk with sudo I did get access.

I won't go through the whole process of what I tried but just give this a try (I tried testdisk in Windows but no go). It's been a few years and my memory is a bit off but if you have a Live Linux CD/DVD/USB or a Distro installed that you can use sudo on -->

Boot to Linux with the drive connected.

After fully booting, open a terminal and type this at the CLI -> "sudo testdisk"

At the first screen you can set it to create a log, I didn't bother.

At the next screen if it shows your drive, you may have a chance -> Make sure you select the right drive... And Proceed

On the next screen, choose the partition table type (Probably Intel) and hit enter.

Now, here is the deal --> I tried analyzing my drive so many times over like 2-3 years that I had given up on ever getting it working, if you want, try that first, if you have tried it like me along with other options and such -->

Just select the "MBR Code" "Write TestDisk MBR to first sector" Hit ok or reboot or quit (whatever) after it finished that.

Make sure you reboot and then try it... Hope it works for you like it did for me. Been using it for at least 3+ year again after I got it working again. It did do the same thing a couple times but after following that same procedure, it worked again. I had most of the issues with it while using XP and since I started using it with Linux and Windows 10 exclusively, I haven't had any issues since.

Good luck....

Edit: Oh yeah, my WD My Passport has a USB connection directly on the drive, tried removing the HDD to put in a different USB enclosure but didn't have that option.

Well, thank you for your insight. Luckily, i've kept this drive around, so i'll give it a try and report back...

/*
EDIT - 01 December
Reporting back :
- Followed the steps under Linux, the drive isn't detected.
- Under Windows 7 : the drive is detected but can't be initialised.

Ive been testing "portable file managers", xplorer2 Lite is very nice, maybe equal to Q-Dir which is saying something in high praise..., its very well made.

Not to derail topic, but there are 2 interesting "other options I have used & suggest"

If "tiny, best tool byte4byte" is your kick (as is mine), This tool has all its features and is smaller/faster, with MORE features try:

Explorer Commander, current version v1.0.1.2 307kb UPX packaged, stand-alone exe, 100% stealth
https://www.wintools.info/index.php/explorer-commander

IF your a power user: My Commander v4 is 630kb UPX packaged and is JUST INSANE, and has MANY plugins (small warning, I can not tell if this is a PRC or Twain based dev, if that matters)
