That is the kind of software I am after. The only problem is its need for Java. Unfortunately the company I work for is firmly entrenched in the dark ages and see Java as an evil thing (unclean, unclean bring out your dead) they have blocked of all use of java on the company system so I would like something very much like freemind but without the Java.

Still I will give you a 5 for effort on that one LOL

Cheers

I like FreeMind and use it quite often however I was not aware it was portable. If someone tell me how to install it on usb stick I will be a happy camper!

Thanks.

Kranor: This is another program, quite more simple, but than can help (DiagramDesigner)

http://meesoft.logicnet.dk/

But in the same page of FreeMind I have seen some links to other similar programs, that I would like to test too...

At that time I made portable just by installing the program and copying its installation folder into the pendrive. I have made a test today with the Universal Extractor, and it works but the result is a little confusing at first sight.

Please, see this: http://www.thinkgraph.com/english/index.htm

It is based in VB. I have made portable by using Universal Extractor, and then putting all the rendered files, tha appear after the extraction in three different folders, in the same folder of the main app. It seems to work fine. No time to see other dependences or problems of registry...

Thanks! I'll try that.

Freemind works for me as a portable app after the following set-up steps.

1. Create a directory structure on a USB flash drive
PortableApps\CmdoW
PortableApps\FreeMind
PortableApps\Java

2. Download the following:
cmdow.zip from
http://www.commandline.co.uk/cmdow/index.html
freemind-bin-max-0_8_0.zip from
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... up_id=7118

3. Extract using Universal Extractor to the folders created in step 1

4. From a PC with Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0_06 installed copy
the directory jre1.5.0_06 to the Java directory created in step 1

5. Edit PortableApps\FreeMind\freemind.bat to read as follows:
@echo off
cd..
cd cmdow
cmdow.exe @ /HID
cd..
cd FreeMind ..\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\java -Duser.home=. -cp lib\freemind.jar;lib\ant\lib\jaxb-api.jar;lib\ant\lib\jaxb-impl.jar;lib\ant\lib\jaxb-libs.jar;lib\ant\lib\namespace.jar;lib\ant\lib\relaxngDatatype.jar;lib\ant\lib\xsdlib.jar;lib\ant\lib\jax-qname.jar;lib\ant\lib\sax.jar;lib\ant\lib\dom.jar freemind.main.FreeMind

6. Run freemind.bat to start FreeMind.

Notes:
Using CmdoW is optional as it is used here only to close the
command window opened by freemind.bat. If this is not required
remove the lines that reference cmdow in freemind.bat.

In freemind.bat, the use of "-Duser.home=." ensures that FreeMind
configuration files are placed in the same directory as freemind.bat,
rather than Documents and Settings...

In freemind.bat the line that starts "cd FreeMind ..\Java..." upto and
including "...freemind.main.Freemind" should be on one line.

Thought I'd provide an answer to an old thread in case someone happens across this.

XMind - http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1732

(Much more feature-rich than FreeMind.)

bluemind
http://lifehacker.com/5681892/bluemind- ... pplication
I like it for its speed, it's more limited on functions but good enough for simple things

Looks sharp.

Requires dotNET 2.0, but claims to be otherwise portable (a no-install single EXE) with the major negative being lack of interoperability with other programs, according to downloadsquad (http://www.downloadsquad.com/2010/11/04 ... -and-othe/).

I occasionally use http://bubbl.us, which is web based and pretty straightforward. There aren't too many features, but you can export mindmaps to image, xml or html files. You can use it without registration, but you'll probably (?) have more features after registering.

Old thread update:

Freemind is evidently natively portable:
