XAMPP - Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

XAMPP - Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl

#1 Post by Hank7 » Sat Apr 01, 2006 10:06 am

[Moderator note: this is the primary XAMPP program thread. View database entry]

---

Even if you don't need a complete webserver in your pocket, it is nice for every webdesigner to browse those PHP files offline...

From the pages of http://www.apachefriends.org :
XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use - just download, extract and start.
There is a basic version

http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html#641

and a lite version, suitable for smaller devices

http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html#646

Portable installation (from the readme_en.txt):
Unpack the package to your usb stick or a partition of your choice. There it must be on the highest level like E:\ or W:\. It will build E:\xampp or W:\xampp or something like this. Please do not use the "setup_xampp.bat" for an USB stick installation!
Double-click xampp-control.exe to launch.

XAMPP & NetworkActiv Web Server

#2 Post by gp_hbk » Fri Oct 06, 2006 12:16 am

I was surprised to see Server2Go and Uniform Sever in the database but notXAMPP.It's a developer environment for web applications. The package is large though. There are two packages - full (zip 86 MB, 7-zip 28 MB) and lite (zip 43 MB, 7-zip 16 MB). There are also some addons available on the downloads page > http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html

I also found NetworkActiv Web Server. This is like HFS.It supports server-side scripting unlike HFS though.

XAMPP was already submitted, but probably wont make it to the database because it has to be placed on the top level of the drive and thus is not fully portable.

Nonetheless, it is a valuable tool for everyone who does not care where to place the application folder.

From the Readme
Unpack the package to your usb stick or a partition of your choice.
There it must be on the highest level like E:\ or W:\. It will
build E:\xampp or W:\xampp or something like this. Please do not
use the "setup_xampp.bat" for an USB stick installation!
But on http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html#1169 it also says
Question 3: Can I move the XAMPP installation?

Yes, but only if you installed it using the ZIP (z-zip) archive method. After moving the XAMPP package, you must execute the "setup-xampp.bat" to update all configuration files. In this case you can make a copy of XAMPP and put this in a directory somewhere. At last execute the "setup-xampp" and make your tests. Try it out.

If you installed with the Installer, then you must completely uninstall XAMPP and reinstall it at the new location. This is the only way to ensure that all changes made to the registry are cleaned up, and updated for the new location.
which leads me to think that it is possible to launch it portable in a two step process, first let setup-xampp.bat rewrite the absolute paths, then start using one of the *.exe files.

This could be achieved with a single batchfile as launcher, but would it have any influence on existing installations of XAMPP?

Strange... that thing about XAMPP having to be placed in the top level of the drive. I downloaded XAMPP recently and never read that. On my computer I unzipped it to D:\software\internet\xampplite\ and started it, works just great ^_^

Freakazoid is recommending we swap the current entry for the USB distro http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1069#23291 The site reports "XAMPP Lite is an additional extra small XAMPP edition. Configured with relative paths you can use it on usb devices."

Has anyone tested this? And should it get primary listing over XAMPP full? We're currently listing XAMPP Lite which no longer exists and has been folded into the USB drive-friendly distro.

Re: NetworkActiv Web Server (NAWS)

#13 Post by Midas » Tue Mar 11, 2014 4:08 am

Very old topic update: Back then, Mr. Lee said (see above) that NetworkActiv Webserver (NAWS) had made it into TPFC, but I couldn't find it now, and although it hasn't been developed since, it might still be a candidate for a submission...?
 • http://www.networkactiv.com/WebServer.html author wrote:NetworkActiv Web Server (NAWS) was designed from scratch with the intent of being the very easiest Web server software available and is not based on any previously existing web servers or programs, while still providing the necessary advanced features. With an intuitive and to-the-point graphical user interface, NAWS can be set up in a matter of minutes, even by the inexperienced user. NAWS includes support for the industry standard features, such as CGI, PHP, and Perl, as well as support for serving byte ranges, which allows for real-time positioning of audio files that are being streamed.

NAWS is a single 612KB exe with a simple interface; it asks permission for installation when run, keeping settings files in its folder if you decline.

Download latest NAWS release (currently v3.5.16) from http://www.networkactiv.com/WebServer.html.

The latest version is some distance out ahead of our current entry, which makes me want to retest. Part of the problem however is version confusion as there is v5.5.38, 5.6.24 and 7.0.9 on their download page (https://www.apachefriends.org/download.html). I'm not sure what to list.

Still, it lists portable right in the file names https://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/ ... ws/5.6.24/ so hopefully that's still the case.

From site download page:
Version 5.5.38 / PHP 5.5.38
Includes: Apache 2.4.23, MariaDB 10.1.16, PHP 5.5.38, phpMyAdmin 4.5.1, OpenSSL 1.0.2, XAMPP Control Panel 3.2.2, Webalizer 2.23-04, Mercury Mail Transport System 4.63, FileZilla FTP Server 0.9.41, Tomcat 7.0.56 (with mod_proxy_ajp as connector), Strawberry Perl 7.0.56 Portable

Version 5.6.24 / PHP 5.6.24
Includes: Apache 2.4.23, MariaDB 10.1.16, PHP 5.6.24, phpMyAdmin 4.5.1, OpenSSL 1.0.2, XAMPP Control Panel 3.2.2, Webalizer 2.23-04, Mercury Mail Transport System 4.63, FileZilla FTP Server 0.9.41, Tomcat 7.0.56 (with mod_proxy_ajp as connector), Strawberry Perl 7.0.56 Portable

Version 7.0.9 / PHP 7.0.9
Includes: Apache 2.4.23, MariaDB 10.1.16, PHP 7.0.9, phpMyAdmin 4.5.1, OpenSSL 1.0.2, XAMPP Control Panel 3.2.2, Webalizer 2.23-04, Mercury Mail Transport System 4.63, FileZilla FTP Server 0.9.41, Tomcat 7.0.56 (with mod_proxy_ajp as connector), Strawberry Perl 7.0.56 Portable
Difference only in PHP version.

From FAQ:
XAMPP Lite is a smaller bundle of XAMPP components, which is recommended for quick work using only PHP and MySQL. Some servers or tools such as Mercury Mail and FileZilla FTP are missing in the Lite version.
And about portability:
If you installed XAMPP using the ZIP and 7zip versions, shut down all XAMPP servers and exit all panels. If you installed any services, uninstall and shut them down too. Now simply delete the entire folder where XAMPP is installed. There are no registry entries and no environment variables to clean up.
So maybe we should just mention in the entry about differences without pointing to exact version? But there no such cases in the database. Or maybe four entries for each version?
I don't know
