TestDisk - Data recovery: Partition Table / Pictures

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

TestDisk - Data recovery: Partition Table / Pictures

#1 Post by AlephX »

Hi!
This can be an useful application, but I have to warn you (and ask you) about things which are not clear to me:

1) it is "almost" a console app, even if drove by cursors+enter
2) I did not test how to install it "lite" (without all the docs and so on)
3) it writes 8 keys into the register, all of them related to the cygwin.dll (included)

let´s go on! 8)

Site (on Wikipedia, boys!) http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
DL page: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

Synopsis (Wiki!)
TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting your Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

TestDisk can find lost partitions for all of these file systems:

BeFS ( BeOS )
BSD disklabel ( FreeBSD/OpenBSD/NetBSD )
CramFS, Compressed File System
DOS/Windows FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32
HFS and HFS+, Hierarchical File System
JFS, IBM's Journaled File System
Linux Ext2 and Ext3
Linux Raid
RAID 1: mirroring
RAID 4: striped array with parity device
RAID 5: striped array with distributed parity information
RAID 6: striped array with distributed dual redundancy information
Linux Swap (versions 1 and 2)
LVM and LVM2, Linux Logical Volume Manager
Mac partition map
Novell Storage Services NSS
NTFS ( Windows NT/2K/XP/2003 )
ReiserFS 3.5, 3.6 and 4
Sun Solaris i386 disklabel
Unix File System UFS and UFS2 (Sun/BSD/...)
XFS, SGI's Journaled File System
Installation: (maybe) unzip the folder and copy it on your storage device. The applications to click are in folder \testdisk-6.5\win\:

testdisk_win.exe
photorec_win.exe

Size on disk: more than 1.5 Mb

License: GPL

I have posted TestDisk to the database under a separate entry, since it serve a different function compared to PhotoRect (former recovers entire partitions, latter recovers files). Thanks!

I don't usually cover betas but it's been a long time since the last update of this very excellent program.

It's great to realize multi-platform TestDisk is still being updated. 8)

Incidentally, the last stable is v7.0, dated from 2015-04-18 (release notes at http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_7.0_Release).

Relevant TPFC's database entries:

I would venture a new stable will be released eventually...

TestDisk pulled me out of the fire yesterday. I had my primary backup drive (Western Digital MyBook) lose it's partition table due to what I think is a failed drive case. TestDisk got it back but oddly I had to still run a standard Windows disk check (via the drive Properties menu, not chkdsk).

I had a few items on that drive that were ONLY on that drive, meaning it wasn't a great backup system. The mirroring process is underway now.

Will donate some dough to the TestDisk project soon.
