USB Raptor - using a key drive for security

#1 Post by webfork »

synopsis wrote:Turn any USB flash drive to a computer lock and unlock key! USB Raptor can lock the system once a specific USB drive is removed from the computer and unlock when the drive is plugged in again to any USB port. The utility checks constantly the USB drives for the presence of a specific unlock file with encrypted content. If this specific file is found the computer stays unlocked otherwise the computer locks.
I haven't had a chance to test this (mostly because my USB ports are at a premium and having ANOTHER one function as a sort of key is difficult) but I have to admit this program has been in development for some time now, where a lot of similar programs have come and gone.

Throwing this in resources as it's unlikely to be portable.

License: unfortunately it's another Creative Commons license, which is frustrating as CC is not a software license.

USB Raptor is still actively developed, v0.12.72.898 released, dated 2018-03-25 (no changelog, downloads are at https://sourceforge.net/projects/usbraptor/files/).

I haven't tested it, but it is DotNET based. Here's an interesting passage from the FAQ:
author of https://sourceforge.net/p/usbraptor/wiki/FAQ/ wrote:Customization options are available by using more_setting.ini file. This file is located on the same directory with the executable and there are few options you can set to customize the lock screen looks.

That is very interesting, thanks. Maybe it is portable!

Notable New feature:

Running third party program/scripts on lock/unlock has interesting possibilities

from USB Raptor Documentation 1.8.pdf

Run on lock/unlock can be used to integrate with other executables and script
files. However it is not limited to these file types, it can be used to navigate to
web sites or even open specific files. Just enter the file path or the website
address and use the test hyperlinks to verify that the functions are working.

Program update: this has seen several changes over the past year, mostly in terms of supported languages: https://www.softpedia.com/progChangelog ... 46916.html
