I'm already a fan of this program so it's just a bonus that development is so active. If this keeps up we could be look at the FileZilla of secure messaging.

Re: Isotoxin 0.4.503

#67 Post by smaragdus »

Isotoxin at version 0.4.503, changes:
  • number of backup files can be limited by size, time or amount
  • language can be selected via menu
  • better pad keyboard handling in editor
  • support ctrl+backspace and ctrl+delete in editor

  • XMPP: added connection option "Allow only encrypted connection"
  • XMPP: added connection option "Allow only trusted connection"
  • Video call button

  • Try reconnect if network error
  • Unused (off) plugins are now unloaded from memory (plghost processes are terminated)
  • Now contacts are fully handled by Isotoxin itself (not by plugins, as it was in previous version). This led to a change in the profile format and (I hope) to fix a contact corrupt problem.
Important! New profile no longer compatible with old versions of Isotoxin's (profile will be automatically upgraded). If you want to use old version of Isotoxin, please, backup profile (btw, Isotoxin backups your profile every start, see backup path in system settings)
Note that to see the Video Call button one needs to hover the mouse cursor over the Call (phone receiver) button:

Didn't know Isotoxin had video calls!

How's the audio and video quality compared to Skype? I've been using Wire as of late, since it is cross-platform.
is it stealth? ;)

This is probably a bad test but I've been using Skype on a near daily basis at work and the audio is crap. Isotoxin audio was better when I ran my last test but I have to note that it supposedly uses the same audio technology as Skype (the open Opus protocol). I'll try to test it again soon and give a better analysis.

Isotoxin supports video calls since version 0.3.396 (from 2015.12.05) and full screen video since version 0.3.424 (from 2016.02.21). Unfortunately I cannot answer your question- I stopped using Skype long time ago and I have never tested the video calls in Isotoxin (I use it mainly for text messages and file transfers). About audio calls- the audio quality sounded good to me but I was using cheap headphones. Currently I have only one other program that support video calls- LINE (LINE at Softpedia, at AlternativeTo and at Wikipedia)- it is cross-platform but closed source, not portable and I do not know how secure it is (more about LINE Security). When I test Isotoxin video calls I will post my observations here. There is an Android Tox client- Antox, but I have never tested it because I do not have an Android device.

@ozziguy

Currently Toxygen has one advantage over Isotoxin- it runs on Linux. But it has one major disadvantage too- Toxygen does not support video calls because of a problem the developer cannot resolve for the time being. Overall Isotoxin offers much more features so if you are on Windows only I suppose that Isotoxin might be handier for you. As far as I know the developer of Isotoxin is working on Linux version but it is not available yet.

I have no idea how to use Isotoxin...
I created a Tox ID using MirandaNG some time ago. I see no way of using that ID with my new Isotoxin. It keeps creating a new ID.
Also, do I have to create a network when I start using Isotoxin? What parameters should I use so I can be on the same network with you guys?
Maybe I didn't have my full dose of glucose yet...
