GoldBug.sf.net - Secure Messenger with multi-encryption

#1 Post by marcel333 »

http://goldbug.sourceforge.net/

GoldBug is a secure Instant Messenger with Multi encryption.

try current Server: 178.83.35.133 : 4710

You can be sure with using GoldBug (GB), that no third party can look into your chat communication. Private user-to-user communication remains private. GoldBug (short: GB or GBIM) therefore uses strong multi-encryption with different layers of modern encryption technologies. It offers as well decentral and encrypted Email and decentral public E*IRC-Chat.
Is GoldBug really secure?
GoldBug uses modern technology based on open source libgcrypt libraries to encrypt the data. Not only the communication over the internet is encrypted several times with different methods, as well the application stores your data in an encrypted database.

Interesting stuff. Though I wish the home page wasn't light grey text on a white background. Found that very hard to read.

Some quick notes:
  • This appears to have gone beyond just an IM tool to push into messaging (email), file sharing, group chat, and more ... it's rapidly approaching RetroShare in terms of functionality and might be more anonymous.
  • Seems fairly technical ... reading the manual seems necessary. Edit: I got a little lost on this step. Think maybe a "lite" version of the software might be necessary.
  • Size: 118 MB uncompressed, 167 uncompressed
Font sizes on the setup screen are way too small
  • IRC isn't like standard IRC: you need a channel key before you can join anything.
Some cryptography notes:
  • Key sizes are surprisingly high (defaults to 3072, goes up to 15360), my 2 year old Intel machine generated a key pair in less than 30 seconds on default settings and Twofish.
  • No Diffie Helman keys (uses RSA)
  • Requires 16 character passwords

Has anyone tested it? Have they cleaned it up at all?

What do you mean by "cleaned up"?
Although GoldBug is in my test list I have not tested it yet because it is not easy to test a chat program alone.

Tried running v3.1 portable and i get an error "The procedure entry point _time32 could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll"

Downloaded the 3.0 version and get an error "Normaliz.dll" not found, so i copied a version from TaskCoach Portable to the goldbug 3.0 folder and it works fine so far
