Re: Isotoxin - a portable Tox client for Windows

@I am Baas
Yes, Isotoxin is my preferred client- I like its GUI, it is stealth and it has multilingual spell-check, but I also test qTox (hunting for bugs and comparing features), in fact a bug in qTox concerning portability was the cause to search for alternatives and that was how I came upon Isotoxin.

For now Isotoxin is one man project but the development is fast. The developer is open to suggestions. He told me that he would port Isotoxin to Linux in the future but an Android version is not very likely for the time being.

Edit
I am curious- what do you think of Tox protocol? Do you consider using it or you prefer more traditional protocols? What I like most about Tox is that it is encrypted, P2P and does not require servers and phone numbers. Telegram is not bad at all but I don't like its profile connection to a phone number.

Thanks for doing that. I made some rather drastic changes to the text based on this protocol but everything else looks sharp.

Thanks for the edit.

There was a crash introduced in Isotoxin version 0.3.437, which is fixed in Isotoxin version 0.3.439:
- crash fix (introduced in 0.3.437)
- fix dark theme color of information text of encrypt profile in settings dialog
- fix power user checkbox (not saved across restarts)
- hunspell library was updated to 1.4.0
Ironically Isotoxin has always been very stable but the version I submitted to the database was faulty.

Tox looks intriguing.

I haven't tested this yet, but does Isotoxin support multiple accounts or just a single user?
is it stealth? ;)

@freakazoid
You can create as many profiles as you want- "Settings-Profile-Create new":
Isotoxin 0.3.442 - 2016-04-24 - 002.png
Isotoxin 0.3.442 - 2016-04-24 - 002.png (5.52 KiB) Viewed 65029 times
Also inside a single profile you can run multiple Tox identities (Join network).

Isotoxin 0.4.461 bugs

1. When Isotoxin is minimized to the system tray the tray icon randomly disappears. Launching Isotoxin recreates the tray icon.

2. Lost 2 thirds of my contact list this morning when I launched Isotoxin. Only placeholders remain. Any ideas of how to retrieve the missing entries?

About 1- I think that this doesn't happen randomly but only when Windows Explorer crashes- I have reported this bug before.
About 2- this has never happened to me- I use Isotoxin daily from version 0.2.353 since September 2015.

You may submit bug reports either via the official forum, or via the GitHub Issues or contact the developer directly via Mail or Tox.

Although I have never lost a contact I make a back-up of my Tox profile from time to time.

Great news, thanks. Will update. Especially like the video-over-lan capability. Although maybe it seems silly, I can think of several uses and I don't think there's another program that will do that.

I've been using this for a while now and very happy with a lot of great functionality and a very intelligent design. If it just stays secure and stable, I'll be happy.

Wishlist:
  • OTR encryption - especially now that the program supports Jabber
  • Addition of Tor for anonymity - certainly you can enable this through Advanced Onion Router, but an internal tool means you could set expectations for users (VoIP and other high-bandwidth operations are unlikely to function over Tor).
  • Desktop sharing that lets you select individual windows rather than the entire desktop
  • Notifications - Set visual-only notifications (no sound) and visa versa
  • File server - ability to share a folder and let someone download what they like rather than manually sending files
