MultiPar - file verification and redundancy

#1 Post by MarkyMark »

---

MultiPar is an up-to-date (in development) version that seems portable out of the box (just download the ZIP file). Don't know if it's Stealth or not (though file association is useful).

MultiPar at version 1.2.9.2.

MultiPar at Softpedia
Without system integration (PAR files association, shell and send to integration) MultiPar seems to be fully portable- settings saved in INI files inside program folder (MultiPar.ini and MultiParShlExt.ini).
MultiPar is an excellent tool and to some extent- unique since all similar programs seem to have been abandoned long time ago. I didn't know it was in the database- in fact it is still private but I think that it deserves to become public not only because MultiPar is a well-written program but also because there isn't a single similar utility (which can create and handle PAR files) in the database.

..

Update
It turned out that MultiPar.EU is an European unofficial mirror, while the official web-site is this one. There is also a forum dedicated to MultiPar.

Use case
  • It seems that the primary use for this program is for saving to long term, offline backups where you don't totally trust the media (e.g. DVDs and tape backup). As the media deteriorates or gets scratched, the PAR data can help recover from minor errors. The program can also verify saved data is unmodified (hashing).
License
  • Freeware. Despite so many of the components being open source, the developer of Quick Par is keeping that closed.

MultiPar needs an official forum topic and it should be this one because most posts are about it and not QuickPar. Comments welcome.

BTW, QuickPar is still v0.9.1 and webpage is at http://www.quickpar.org.uk/.

@Midas
Perhaps this thread should be split into two- the first post for QuickPar and all later ones for MultiPar. About QuickPar- it was abandoned about 8 years ago.

@TP109
Thanks for voting, MultiPar is a unique program- we don't have anything similar in the database and I think that MultiPar deserves to be public.

I did a dramatic entry rewrite. After doing the research to put that text together, I'm pretty sold on the program overall and will probably start using it in concert with large file (50+ megs) distribution.

PAR Buddy

#9 Post by smaragdus »

Off topic
There is a similar program- PAR Buddy, the web-site is down, the program is reviewed at Softpedia but it can't be downloaded from there since the Softpedia article points at external, no longer available download links. I have PAR Buddy version 2.80, x32, does anyone have the x64 version?

@webfork
This file- PARBuddy280_64bit_Setup.exe- has become the holy grail for me, for the first time I fail to find a file I have been looking for, and I exhausted all the resources I could think of. This is a ghost file, I could only find its virtual traces here and here. Just because I failed in my quest I decided to ask the community.

MultiPar at version 1.2.9.4, latest changes:
[ Changes from 1.2.9.3 to 1.2.9.4 ]

GUI update
Change: Options for hardware environment are put in independent section.
Change: Some options are put in different sections from previous version.
New: It's possible to change background style of text over progress-bar.

Client update
New: PAR2 encoder supports AVX2 on recent CPU.

Note: MultiPar 1.2.9.4a
I forgot to add DLL files (par2j_extra.dll and par2j64_extra.dll) in the file-list of the installer package. I made a new installer package for users who have a recent PC with AVX2 support.

gezley commented in MultiPar TPFC database entry to note that Multipar.eu is an unofficial mirror and the real MultiPar author's webpage is at http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA021385/ -- where the following piece can be found to the same effect [sic].
  • http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA021385/ author wrote:European Mirror [http://multipar.eu/]: A user made an unofficial download site for European users. If you cannot download files from official site, you may try un-authorized site at your own risk. Because this site is releasing files which I didn't upload, you had better check hash values to compare with values on authorized page. Because the online documents were edited or obsolate, refer the latest documents in MultiPar package. Users must not donate on the site, but use below. Is it that we at TPFC have been misattributing this software and some correction is due or is it in fact a fork of the program, considering Multipar.eu has released MultiPar v1.2.9.6 (https://multipar.eu/changelog), while the mentioned author page has a v1.2.8.7 stable (no changelog; official download page at http://www.vector.co.jp/soft/dl/winnt/u ... 60801.html) and a v1.2.9.6 beta (changelog and download at https://www.livebusinesschat.com/smf/in ... pic=6054.0)?

I can't answer this, as I haven't been using MultiPar...

BTW, the same author has an interesting post concerning "How to add recovery record to ZIP or 7-Zip archive" at https://www.livebusinesschat.com/smf/in ... pic=4922.0.

I'll switch the entry over to the Japanese page just to be safe. The front-end is closed-source so this isn't a fork situation. As a result, it's important to point to the real author as gezley suggests.

EDIT: think I figured something out:

Both versions can be found on the .JP site, with 1.2.9.6 listed as the beta version. Just for the time being, I'll link to the beta just because that's what we have now. If anyone thinks we should use the stable version, I have no problem modifying that.
