I'm looking for a portable DVD maker, I have already tried Thinstalling Nero Visual express and AVI2DVD but had no luck so far.

MediaCoder + DVDStyler Portable
A MediaCoder + DVDStyler Portable combo should work.
MediaCoder v0.5.1-r5 seems pretty stable.
hope it works out 4 U

for what it's worth....
I use DvdAuthorGui on my home pc, it is a wonderfully simple authoring app. It does not do editing, but can create menus from your graphic stills (motion menus can be done, but rather a complex procedure). It converts your edited mpeg or elementary streams to dvd-compliant files, ready to burn with your favorite burning app.
I portablized it with JauntePE, and it seems to work just fine, but I need to test it on more than two pc's to be certain.

I've downloaded thinstall demo, but not tried it yet.
FIRST I must learn how to create a virtual machine so I can have a clean environment. < why does everything I learn require that I must learn something else first -- at this rate I will be regressing to kindergarten before I know it!>
I don't have Nero, but do have Avi2Dvd, if you are referring to the predecessor to Donald Graft's DGIndex. I could give Avi2Dvd a quick run with JauntePE and see what falls out of the hopper.

oops, you are talking about AVI TO DVD.
I was thinking of the old Dvd2Avi, a horse of an entirely different color. (not to mention a different generation.)
Nope, I am way too in-experienced to take a jauntePE try at that one right now. Avi2Dvd looks to be a front-end for about a half-dozen apps, a whole flock of codecs, and a handful of various encoders. And I'll bet nearly every one of them writes to the registry.
I'll try first to get my head around virtual machines, and then see if I can get my head around ThinStall. Maybe then we can work it out somehow.
so sorry. My mind has gone home for a nap and left me here in the office all alone.

I'm the same with JPE, I get stuck on apps with more than a few dependencies no matter how much I read up on all the forums.
I didn't bother with a virtual machine for thinstall.
It was much easier to just do a fresh install on a spare partition.
I then Ghosted the fresh Partition and just re-ghosted it after each attempt.
It's really quite quick and easy.
I got Divx Working fine and included a codec pack so I can use most formats on any pc so I can't really understand the problem with this one.
Thinstall works kind of like regshot by analysing the entire system before and after and comparing so in theory you should be able to make a sandbox for a whole string of programs together.
