I like Everything and Locate32. Both Hddb and Everything require NTFS to work. Maybe that's why it doesn't for you...

Many thanks for the links.

No, all of my drives (besides of USB, Cards) are NTFS formated, it is an external hard disk, 3 TB, which is scanned obviously but not shown. http://i.imgur.com/PmzcrGX.png | http://i.imgur.com/mcjlK5e.png|

I use both of them, with Everything - great program - you cannot create databases as far as I know, respectively use one when the drives are not running. I need such a program to manage my drives, to know what they contain (when they are not plugged in).
Yes, Locate is the best program for my purposes I could find (Hddb would be better), but there is not shown a folder structure (like you could see e.g. in Win Explorer of the hard disk) like Hddb does and the speed of Hddb is hard to exceed.

For your needs you may want to try some of the portable programs under the category "Files - Catalogers":
http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?sc=148

In particular I highly recommend SnapHTML, which takes a snapshot of the folder you specified(this can be the root of your external drive) and outputs to a HTML file that can be viewed in any browser. When you open the HTML file you can see and navigate the folder structure and search for filenames using an integrated search bar. Also works for FAT-formatted drives.

Currently I'm also trying out Virtual Volumes View for want of a native program. Same as SnapHTML with the addition that you can see the files from all cataloged drives in one view and can search across all of them, though the audio metadata catalog feature seems to only work with certain files. You can export the filelist to a CSV file.

Yes, I had searched that category without success.

This one I cannot get to work at all: http://i.imgur.com/7yqD4QL.png

Yes, very nice display in the browser. But it is a bit circumstantial, one have to each time click through the pathes / folders you have a snapshot of and it is very slow, on I: I have about 1 million files, it takes...do not know, I stopped it after half an hour of scanning.

Yes, the display also is good, I had already tried it, but it really is too slow, I would like it, but that slowness....

Many thanks again.

Thanks for the link.

It is on my drive already. It does not look like to show the files / folders of drives not being plugged in.

You are correct. That's a cataloger type program job, I'm afraid.

@Midas: Cathy seems to be the tool uwotm8 needs, but I don't like him, so I won't tell him that.

  • Excellent suggestion, nonetheless, marred only by somewhat jittery portability... ;)

Oops, you do not like me? I can't believe it, that cannot be true, I am just a spotless, unpretentious poster.

I sometimes had used Cathy, but it is a bit unflexibel, so you cannot move the catalogs in the "Catalog" tab, no include filters obviously, but I will try it again.
