OW Shredder - file, folder, drive wipe

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

OW Shredder - file, folder, drive wipe

#1 Post by I am Baas »

"OW Shredder" erases files irretrievably. This program overwrites the affected file data blocks on the disk space, which prevents the reconstruction of the deleted documents. Individual files, free disk storage as well as entire disks or volumes can be eliminated by various erasing methods with "OW Shredder".

Obviously, I haven't tested it (yet), but looks like a great find, Baas.

A nice shredder with context menu integration (plus unlocker), a keeper. By the way I prefer the blue theme too.

License question: I couldn't find anything clear on the site so I checked Softpedia, who's listing it as freeware. His site lists BSD but I can't find anything connected to the code. I emailed his support address but got a message failure.

[Note: Something was going weird with the forum quote function, hence the odd quoting system used below.]

Hi and welcome to the site.

Unfortunately, I sent email to support (at) hendrik-schiffer.com and it failed.

> This means it is free for personal and commercial use as long as it not modified in any way.

I spend a lot of time here on the site with licenses so I should point out that's not what what the license says. The license you listed says users can do whatever they want with it so long as they include attribution. You might want to address modification/reverse-engineering specifically as I've seen in other licenses. Additionally (and more importantly) the BSD license is something that governs the use of the source code. I couldn't find a link to the code anywhere, suggesting that this program isn't BSD licensed. You've taken the "ancestor" BSD license (as Wikipedia calls it) and just taken out the word "source".

Please correct me if I've misunderstood something.

Addendum:

I should add that you're welcome to use that license (or whatever you want), but I wouldn't list the word "BSD" connected to anything that doesn't have source code available. You can look forward to more confusion similar to mine. Additionally, if the program gets added to the site, we'll list it as freeware to set expectations with visitors.

The BSD was choosen after we received a couple of requests about reverse-engineering to understand particularly the erase process better, since it is not planned the release the full source code.
Especially because reverse-engineering cannot be stopped anyway and we want to spread portable yet powerful tools so we decided for that license.

Of course we also answer questions per contact page or e-mails. Sadly we did not receive yours.

Wow, no.  You're totally missing my point.  It's not "BSD" anymore if you edit it.  An edited license becomes a different license, especially when it's an open license and you take out the "open" part.  You could call it the OW License or the HSDev License or whatever you want but calling it BSD is inaccurate and -- because you're not distributing the code -- dishonest.  You might as well call it the RedHat SUSE Linux BSD License for all the meaning that has.

@HSDev

I noticed that OW Shredder was updated to version 6.22 Build 344 on 08.04.2015 but could not locate the change log, what was added/modified/fixed in this release? Also, do you mind including one with future releases of the program? Thanks.
