Kchmviewer

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Kchmviewer

Kchmviewer is a free, open-source chm (MS HTML help file format) viewer written in C++ for Unix, Mac and Windows systems. Unlike most existing CHM viewers for Unix, it uses Trolltech Qt widget library, and could optionally be compiled for better KDE integration. It does not require KDE, but may be compiled with KDE widget support. Since version 5.0 it uses the Webkit API to show the content.
Version tested: 6.0

It writes to the registry

and creates a folder in AppData

Excellent news, thanks.

PA just came out with a version: http://portableapps.com/apps/office/kchmviewer-portable

Synopsis: Tool for looking at CHM-format ebooks, frequently used for help files (CHM means "Compressed Help Manual) Very happy to see this. Windows can already view CHM files but this looks familiar (but improved) and has more features than the default viewer: zoom, bookmarks, even extracts CHM content so you can send someone (for example) just a page or two from a HOWTO to solve a problem.

Additionally, when I create help files, it's important to make sure non-Windows computers can view them. It goes a long way to creating a standard for self-contained help files.

Cross-platform (Linux/Win)

Anyway, very happy the folks at PA took the initiative to make this available.

Wishlist:
* support drag and drop
* Ability to open multiple CHM files at once (I think this is on the way ... the menu system seems to be prepared for this)
* Support for other ebook formats

License: GPL v3

Bumping this thread over to submission...

KchmViewer is still best suited for .chm files, and does a good job, .epub is a different story - stick with Sumatra or ..?

Anyway, KchmViewer is @ v7.3 - http://portableapps.com/apps/office/kchmviewer-portable

... http://www.ulduzsoft.com/linux/kchmviewer/

To clarify: KchmViewer can open .epub files but, in my experience anything more than basic text in paragraph form it fails, the formatting is misplaced and images don't get displayed. Sumatra seems to have no issues at all with the same file.

So I've had KCHMViewer on my machines for a long time without really taking any extra energy to use it. A quick side-by-side comparison really asked me the question: why haven't you replaced windows CHM viewer already?

And here's the options menu:

I tested this with a few epub files while putting together the entry and it seemed to work okay but I can't say much past that.

Thanks Checker.

Right as I post this, I just noticed they put out v.7.5 so an update to this. Sigh. A PA version is probably a few days away yet but still.
