Pictus, a lightweight image viewer w/ PSD thumbnail support

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Pictus, a lightweight image viewer w/ PSD thumbnail support

#1 Post by Specular »

Found this very nice image viewer while looking for a way to add Photoshop thumbnail support to Windows Explorer. Site.

Features that stand out to me: PSD/animated GIF/transparent PNG support - with a user-selectable transparent background color. Also zoom/pan/mouse controls, as well as various window resizing and positioning options. The status bar can also be hidden.
Pictus is a fast, free image viewer. It is designed to be small, fast and just totally sweet. If you are content with your current photo viewer software you can still install Pictus and just let it help Windows Explorer show thumbnails for even more images.

Now with portable support added in v1.2.0. Comes in 32/64 bit versions, and is open source. Have yet to try the PSD thumbnail aspect of it as I tried the zipped version.

Default keyboard shortcuts:
  • Image navigation = Home/End, PgUp/PgDown, Space/Backspace
  • Rename current image = F2
  • Random image = R
  • Move image to recycle bin = Del
  • Bypass the recycle bin and delete the image immediately = Shift+Del

Should be noted that the latest 2014 release has had all support for WinXP removed.

Also the author is currently requesting suggestions, you might contact him and request the settings.ini also function inside exe directory.
He seems like a nice guy he may change it for you :)

Actually have submitted some bug reports :) I have a small list of features that would be nice to add also, portability is obviously one that would be most beneficial for users here though.

Thanks a lot for letting us know about Pictus. It's the fastest image viewer I have seen on my low-end laptop. It was able to load a huge photo within a sec, when all others take about 3/4 sec. Browsing through a lot of photos are blazing fast now. I loved it and it's my deafult image viewer now.

Added to the database - Please vote :)

New in v1.2.0 is portable support!
A new version of Pictus is available. New stuff:

Keyboard shortcuts for 100% zoom (numeric 1) and reset zoom (0)
Updated libpng due to possible security vulnerability
Portable mode
Rendering improvements

To put Pictus in portable mode, just place a file named “Pictus.ini” next to the executable. Pictus should detect and use that file instead for settings instead of storing settings under AppData.

Cool, I use Irfanview with this command-line parameter - /hide=5 - to get an identical UI.

But good to know of other alternatives.
is it stealth? ;)

New 1.2.1 version fixes some random crashes. The naming structure of the download link has also changed, so the entry has been updated accordingly.

Latest version 1.5 is not stealth, creates a folder popperman in appdata.

@ripu
Have you created an empty Pictus.ini file in program folder? For me Pictus version 1.5.1 works as a truly portable program.
Since version 1.5.0 Pictus offers EXIF orientation support, which is great for me.

Can confirm this. A 'Poppeman' directory is created in AppData when launching the v1.5 executable, even though I've been keeping the Pictus.ini always in the root directory.

Will try 1.5.1 in a moment and update this post.

Edit: 1.5.1 doesn't have this issue. Which is odd as the release notes indicate only the language settings were updated.

@ripu & @Specular
Yes, I confirm that Pictus version 1.5.0 is not portable- it creates an empty file- 'C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Poppeman\Pictus\runlog.txt'. I first tested the latest version of Pictus- 1.5.1 and this problem doesn't appear there.

Any guesses what should Pictus icon represent? For me it looks mysterious.
