Free Download Manager (FDM)

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Free Download Manager (FDM)

#1 Post by Jami »

FDM is now open source. This might be a good one to check out for addition to PortableFreeware.

I wrote a portable wrapper a few weeks ago, but it was written from scratch. I can upload if anybody wants it.

Free Download Manager is now portable freeware friendly. The latest version (2.5.713) allows one to create a portable version. This is done by first installing the program, and then going to the File menu. There is a menu entry, "Create Portable Version", and all you need to do is specify a directory to install the portable version to. Once this is done you can uninstall Free Download Manager.

The current version allows bit torrent and flash video downloading, and even has a uploading manager.

This version allows you to carry your history along, including unfinished downloads. This is different from the standard version, which saved your history on the PC you used. I used the standard version on my USB drive, and this was a bit of an annoyance.

I think this version of Free Download Manager qualifies for inclusion into the Portable Freeware collection.

I'm using FDM's PortableApps' version and the program is mysteriously starting my local copy of Chrome both at program start and shut-down. Anyone else seeing this behavior? Really annoying.

I don't remember ever having this issue and I retested now version 3.9.4.1478 and it still works fine (I use a custom JPE version daily without problems, also).
Must be some setting you changed (maybe the browser plugin).
Is Chrome your default browser? Try changing to another one if so.
Is Chrome the installed version? I would be angry at you if so!

First, I posted this to the wrong thread by accident ... going to move over to the official FDM thread.

Using the default settings. I'll try a reinstall.

No, it's FFox

> Is Chrome the installed version? I would be angry at you if so!

I do, but it wasn't by choice. One of my webdev operations requires a Chrome install.

Thanks for the suggestions.

A quick look at what I do with the ZIP preview function in Free Download Manager when downloading XMind:

Previously this saved a lot of download time for a rather large file but unfortunately when I tested it, it didn't actually work. The ZIP file came across broken. The bug has been reported to the FDM site. Edit: this issue was resolved in the latest version.

Tested v5.1.15.4296 x64:
- download size is 47.1 MB
- installation size is 166 MB
- settings are saved in "AppData" (don't know how to change this behavior)
- some registry keys are written during the installation process (and there is no "File" - "Create Portable Version" option like in v3.9.7)
- default installation location is "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\FreeDownloadManager.ORG\Free Download Manager"

And I had to take the following screenshots especially for smaragdus: :)

Thank you, joby!

Portable or not, I will never use Free Download Manager version 5, this is another glaring example of a dumbed-down, terrible-looking GUI:

The second screen-shot is not mine, I do not tolerate such modern ugliness on my machines.

It's also worth noting that Free Download Manager 5 is not open source, unlike previous versions. So it can't be repackaged and redistributed (say to fix portablization issues or get it in a specific format) without express consent of the publisher.

Have to agree with @smaragdus that the FDM5 interface is very bad. It hides too much functionality.

Tested it some time ago for portability and promptly removed it.
