Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier

#1 Post by Midas »

First mentioned by user AlephX (to the best of my knowledge; see http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... php?t=1113 and hence my posting here at the Portable Freeware Discussion forum), Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier (RUC) is an essential utility available for Linux and Windows that deserves its own official TPFC forum topic (the database entry is at http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=149); here it is, then...
  • http://www.roadkil.net/ author wrote:[Unstoppable Copier] Recovers files from disks with physical damage. Allows you to copy files from disks with problems such as bad sectors, scratches or that just give errors when reading data. The program will attempt to recover every readable piece of a file and put the pieces together. Using this method most types of files can be made useable even if some parts of the file were not recoverable in the end.

The program can be used as a daily backup system using its batch mode functions. A list of transfers can be saved to a file and then run from the command line to perform the same batch of transfers on a regular basis without having to use the GUI interface. The program supports command line parameters which allow the application to be run from schedulers or scripts so it can be fully integrated into daily server tasks.

Download latest Unstoppable Copier (stand alone) version (currently v5.2) from http://www.roadkil.net/program.php/P29/.

RUC does write a few settings to the system registry at "HKCU\Software\Roadkil", as previously discussed at http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... php?t=1114 (a yaP launcher config file is at http://pastebin.com/QCGZK8Hg).

FYI, there was another freeware backup utility, DataGrab -- which unfortunately is not being developed anymore (http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... hp?t=17721) -- that relied on RUC for a copying engine.

For some brief instructions on how to manipulate RUC's 'batch mode' configuration files, see http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 180#p62180.

Full online help is at http://www.roadkil.net/support.php?AppI ... sionID=5.2.

 For an interesting article detailing the shortcomings of RUC in massive file copies, and introducing threaded (MS) RichCopy as alternative, see:

A bit sad that Unstoppable have not been updated for 4 years now. Well it works so I can't really complain although since 2010, I have been using strictly FastCopy. However, FastCopy's development seems to have stalled. I actually compiled my own version of FastCopy because I got a bit annoyed with the Engrish and the nitpicky details of the GUI. There's TeraCopy but I continue to have certain issues with it especially when copying thousands and thousands of files where it would randomly stall. SuperCopier is not annoying since they want you to install a bitcoin miner if you want to use the free version. RichCopy is nice but I just don't seem to like it very much.

Although as the article imply, Unstoppable Copier is not meant to copy fast. It's meant more as a recovery tool so it's a bit funny how it's compared to RichCopy but I understand what the author meant.

Seems like most file copiers are "dying" :(

For everyday use, I'm more than satisfied with RUC wich is still my preferred copy manager -- albeit I also use TeraCopy for updates and such. RichCopy is being recommend for humongous copy tasks, those falling the 'days' timescale... :)

Here's an article featuring a comprehensive copy-utility group comparison, which ends up recommending a previously unknown EMCopy and (the apparently non-natively portable) SyncBack (article found via Tinyapps.org blog):
