ProcessCounter (formerly TaskCount)

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

ProcessCounter (formerly TaskCount)

#1 Post by flatfly »

This tool displays the number of currently running processes in the system tray.

Submitted as: http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=2622

Should be stealth portable. (No settings written anywhere, actually)

I didn't know this was an issue. Anyway, the web page was actually wrong (and has just been corrected) as the About dialog of TaskCount clearly states that it's freeware - even though it also says that tips are welcome. If that is a problem, I will bring that up with Sven (the author).

BTW, I'm not the author of TaskCount but am maintaining the web page.

Donationware is not an issue per se, it's just not compatible with TPFC's terms because you have to donate (even if it's a small amount) in order to legally use the software and this is not optional. That being said (and the error being corrected), I've just voted for this app. Thanks!

Edit: added a small screenshot to the database entry.

P.S. my antivirus (Bitdefender) blocked the process because it "acted suspicious" (sorry for the "Romanian" screenshot, but the GUI language can't be changed for this free version and it's somewhat straightforward - Scan result - Action - Blocked); not a problem for me, but I see this being a problem for many potential users. Here is the VT analysis to see that the file is clean.

Great, thanks!

I can see in your screenshot that the display is not that easy to see on a dark background. I have mentioned this to the developer.

About Bitdefender: it's strange that it's detecting it while the VT scan is clean (for Bitdefender at least). Is that something that commonly happens with Bitdefender? Anyway, we'll see what can do about these false detections, they are always a major pain the butt (and almost always coming from the same 4 or 5 AV vendors)...

A new version was released (1.19), featuring lower memory usage, a more readable display and a new icon. The app also has a new name, "ProcessCounter". But I'm not sure how to submit the name and icon change to the database.

You can't. Privilege to edit entries requires rank 1 or higher. See here for information about the rank system: http://www.portablefreeware.com/faq.php#voting.

I updated the entry. :)

Topic update: No suitable online source was found for ProcessCounter.

Apparently, it was authored by the same dev of now gone FS1 website, as a notice was published at trax.x10.mx that the site was moving to www.trustprobe.com/fs1/ (see copy below), but this app was never even mentioned there.

web.archive.org/web/20191010050630/https://www.trustprobe.com/fs1/apps.html

Downvoted.
