PCHunter (system information and troubleshooting)

#1 Post by Midas »

PCHunter is a powerful tool for it's purpose, which is to bring to light the inner recesses of any Windows system where malware might be lurking. PCHunter homepage is Chinese it seems (http://www.epoolsoft.com/forum.php?mod= ... ead&tid=36), but there's an extensive review at http://www.ghacks.net/2014/07/11/pc-hun ... formation/...

PCHunter comes in both 32 and 64 bit options, and it saves its settings in a 'PCHunter[XX].cfg' file inside the program folder (where XX=32/64). There's also a v1.0 windows console version, PCHunter_CMD that comes in 32 and 64 bits versions as well and provides an interactive PCHunter shell -- type '?' to see command options. A payware version exists, too, but I couldn't fathom what possibly could it offer more...

It offers you the ability with the highest privileges to detect, analyze and restore various kernel modifications and gives you a wide scope of the kernel. With its assistance, you can easily spot and neutralize malwares hidden from normal detectors.

I decided to test PCHunter version 1.51 and after PCHunter started it caused BSoD (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA). My antivirus warned me that PCHunter was trying to access a system file- I granted it access and I got BSoD immediately. I have not seen BSoD for at least a year and a half since I re-installed Windows (8) for the last time. I do not dare test PCHunter again.

PCHunter version 1.51 details:

Anti-rootkit tools are seemingly wild beasts -- although I did not get any woes (just) running PCHunter, I had the exact same trouble with a similar tool...

Thanks for checking it out -- sorry you ran into serious system issues like that. If it were within my power, I'd get everyone who does testing here their own separate, sandboxed machine.
