XWidgets Portable

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

XWidget

#1 Post by TenaciousD »

I would like to submit XWidget to the Portable freeware Collection:
Image
http://www.xwidget.com/index_xw.html

Size:8MB

Q.What is it?
A. As you could probably see from the screenshot and its name, its a widget engine of sorts. The download includes a few widgets, but the website lists a whole lot more, including some that have an iphone look and feel as well as some that remind me of Windows 8.

Pros:
Looks really great!
Tons of widgets to choose from.(separate download)
Built-in widget editor allowing users to create their own widgets (programming required IFAIK)

Cons:
When adding more widgets using the Add Widget option (when you right click the xwidget icon in system tray) all widgets have the word "Eker" in front of them (Minor problem)
Some users on Cnet complained about adware, but I did not notice any.

Also I want to recommend Xlaunchpad (Same developer as Xwidget)
Image
Its a cool looking program launcher. ScreenShot(BIG)

Both have a very 'smart phone app' feel to them.

Note: I have not tested these programs for portability so if anyone has the time please do so. I really like these 'apps' and I hope other users enjoy them too!

The XLaunchpad download link redirects to CNet, so here's the SoftPedia link:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Lau ... hpad.shtml
SoftPedia wrote:Users are advised to pay attention while installing this ad-supported application:

· Offers to change the default search engine for web browsers installed in the system
· Offers to download or install software or components (Babylon Toolbar) that the program does not require to fully function
EDIT: In fact, the download is at http://code.google.com/p/xlaunchpad/ where a so called portable package is available.

You're welcome, TenaciousD. :)

I found a similar program called WinLaunch (DotNET 4.0 required) at http://mrc0rrupted.deviantart.com/

XWidgets Portable

#6 Post by webfork »

...a Free desktop customization platform. It’s light, handy with powerful visual widget editor and very smooth animations.
Status: Portable. Writes settings to Application folder under "AppData" subdirectory (not on the machine appdata folder).

Stealth: no, when you look up more widgets it uses IE and writes to the standard "Windows\Cookies" and "Temporary Internet Files" folders. I didn't check for any registry writes.

Note that this is a fairly complex program. It's a lot more than just a few clocks, timers, weather, and so forth, it's a tool for building them.

Homepage: http://xwidget.com/

Screenshots (liked these more than the home page): http://www.softpedia.com/progScreenshot ... 18591.html

Note: softpedia is listing the non-portable version as adware while the portable version is "freeware". As such, I wouldn't be surprised if it also went the adware route in the future..

@giulia: please, see the TPFC FAQ (the one at http://www.portablefreeware.com/faq.php, not the forum one at top right)...

XWidget is currently v1.90 (32 bits only, changelog at http://www.xwidget.com/ver.html).

BTW, previously reported XLaunchPad download issues seem to have been fixed. One of XLaunchPad better features is the ability to be configure to display/hide on a double click on the desktop -- and it's currently at v1.09 (for Softpedia's review, check http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Lau ... hpad.shtml).

Arrange apps in XLaunchpad any way you like by dragging icons to different locations or by grouping apps in folders. Simply drag one icon over another to create a folder. You can name the folder whatever you like when you open the folder.
