Vigenere+ text cipher (toy)
Vigenere+ text cipher (toy)
Vigenere+ is a text cipher application meant for entertainment and educational purposes. It enciphers and deciphers text using a keyed Vigenere cipher with a 100 character cipher alphabet and a key derived from your passphrase.

Re: Vigenere+ text cipher (toy)
So, it has been a few days and Vigenere+ is still on the private list... Midas was kind enough to comment on the app but only two people have downloaded it and no one has voted.
Please have a look at it, and if you like it vote for it. If for some reason you don't think it should be in the database please come back and explain why. If there is something about it I can change to make it more acceptable I would very much like to hear about it.

Re: Vigenere+ text cipher (toy)
I admit I did not try it because I don't understand what it does. But I can try to test its portability. Be right back.
Edit: done!

Re: Vigenere+ text cipher (toy)
Thank you joby_toss! Do you think it would help if I gave more details when I post about an app? I guess I kind of assumed people would go to the app listing and read the description...
Re: Vigenere+ text cipher (toy)
Have you thought about merging all ciphers into one application and then having the user select via a combo box?
Re: Vigenere+ text cipher (toy)
Why yes, I have considered that! But I am working on several ciphers over a long time (we are talking a couple years) and I decided to release individual apps for most but maybe not all ciphers. Basically, I was impatient so I went with quantity over quality.
I will probably eventually do one or more combined apps depending on... Things...

Re: Vigenere+ text cipher (toy)
I understand. Thanks for letting me know.
Re: Vigenere+ text cipher (toy)
The details are not the problem for me. I just don't know how to say it without offending you... what's the purpose of this app? Not for you (a programming exercise, I presume), but for the end user? It serves no purpose from what I see (the Vigenere cipher is useless now). Anyway, it's portable and that, I like.dmg wrote:Thank you joby_toss! Hi dmg
Ah the 'Joy of programming'
Thanks for sharing.
Your included source codes were well worth the look.
Crypto programming is always focused on speed full stop.
So it is always interesting to see that an author has managed
to keep clarity in the code, and better still elegance.
So both are great - nice demo's well written.
Plus, AHK seems a very good choice for 'understand at a glance' demo-code.
Your two chosen PFC categories are also spot on.
And do keep them small and separate for clarity sake.
Please don't combine them into the monster mess some
wana-be programmers seem to impress themselves with.
I look forward to the next instalment.
Thanks

Let me guess, you're not a programmer or at best a scripter.NickR wrote: Please don't combine them into the monster mess some wana-be programmers seem to impress themselves with.

@joby_toss:
I certainly do not take offense. And yes, creating the app was mostly a fun/learning project. As to the end user, I am sure very few people would have any use for most of my apps, and I am OK with that.
@NickR:
Why thank you for the mostly undeserved positive reinforcement!
@guinness & NickR:
Ooohh! GEEK FIGHT! (reaches for popcorn)
@guinness:
Hey! Are you besmirching 'scripters'?

@dmg
Your very welcome.
Those are neat and informative programs. So thank-you
Now, if you have your popcorn out,
with apologies as this thread is about your programs,
I have to respond to this silliness
@guinness
That's a poor guess from a guy who declares opinions
that are
(and what is wrong with them?) in support of the 2&3GL languages I am employed to code in,
on Mainframe, Mini-computer and PC for London clients.
If you want another guess, why don't you take it elsewhere in the forums,
and leave this thread to folks more interested in programming and scripting

Re: Vigenere+ text cipher (toy)
I have re uploaded the Vigenere+ zip file. I discovered a small error in the documentation and decided to go ahead and correct it. Since the only change was a single word in one file I have opted not in increment the version number. Frankly it would be silly to do so.
Re: Vigenere+ text cipher (toy)
No way, I have used AutoIt for a very long time that I would be contradicting myself if I did.dmg wrote:@guinness:

That's just it I am interested, at least dmg knows that, since I have helped them many times in that past with AHK and AutoIt. Right dmg?NickR wrote: If you want another guess, why don't you take it elsewhere in the forums,

I didn't take too kindly to your rude comment of "wannabe programmers" bloating applications. So what? I applaud and encourage anyone taking up programming, hey I even support people starting out in this unique art form. Anyway the user who is at the centre of any design project, so if they feel all algorithms should be in one application then it's up to the developer to meet the requirements of the user aka User Centred Design.
