Tested: Portable
PortableUpdate is a tool for updating a Microsoft Windows® computer without the necessity to be connected to any network. This is useful in many circumstances:
  • When the computer reside on a secure Lan isolated from internet;
    When the computer to update doesn’t have access or can't use a proxy server;
    When is necessary to completely update a fresh-formatted computer with the last update before connect it to the network;
    When the computer doesn’t have an hardware network connection at all;
    When the network connection speed is too low or it is necessary to update the computer very speedily;
    In all the other cases when is mandatory to have the complete control on the whole updating process without connecting the computer to the network.
    ...but of course it works very well also if connected!

Great idea. I can see this as very useful for a few things:
  • Security - for machines that must maintain an "air gap" between themselves and the Internet as a matter of policy or by design.
  • Slow Updater - for problems with Window's own auto-updater. For example, when I run a system refresh on my XP machine, there are a LOT of updates and the process absolutely crawls. It's something that needs a dedicated connection for 4+ hours. I can't do that up at a coffee shop and I don't like plugging in my personal laptop at work.
  • Slow Internet - Download updates from a fast connection (e.g. work) and then run them when you get home.
Further, if you're one of the unlucky few on dial-up because you're in a remote location, this seems like the only way to go.

Edit: a similar program mentioned by one of the users in comments (also from Ghacks) -- there's a thread here on the site about it as well: WSUS.

Not exactly similar, because Portable Update uses the standard Windows API to create the exact list of updates needed.
In fact, his reproduce the original windows update agent process.

Got an error msg on a newly installed WinXP (with SP3 by default) system:

Code: Select all

PortableUpdate: Minimum Requirements Not Met
---------------------------
Sorry! this system need to be upgraded before running this program.
The following items do not meet minimum system requirements:
Windows Update Agent and MsComCtl
Looked up both "Windows Update Agent" and "MsComCtl" but couldn't resolve. So far haven't been able to test this program successfully.

Just tested PortableUpdate v2.1.2 in a XP SP3 rig with the latest updates, and found no problem. At start, it asked to download four items to the toolbox folder it created (see list below); after that it just showed the program's regular interface -- with nothing to update, since this is an always on machine that gets automatic updates.
    • Code: Select all

      - MSComCtl.cab
      - WindowsUpdateAgent30-xXX.exe
      - wsusscn2.cab
      - wuredist.cab
What I couldn't figure is why it has a settings tab, when nothing can be changed there...

Actually, the only field that can be changed is the Search Criteria. Try to click on.

It's cool, I'll just merge. Often these duplicate entries can fill in the blanks for the other post.

FYI, Portable Update has a private entry at http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2562 that's still awaiting more votes to be made public -- and it deserves them, IMHO...
