Greenshot - screen capture, image edit, and uploader

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Greenshot - screen capture, image edit, and uploader

#1 Post by David »

Authors Description - Revolutionary screen-shot tool optimized for productivity. Save a screen-shot or a part of the screen to a file within a second. Apply text and shapes to the screenshot. Offers capture of window, region or full screen-shot. Supports several image formats.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/greenshot

Just download the zip package, unzip it and use it.

It writes its setting to the App Folder. I didn't find any changes to the Registry, but correct me if I'm wrong. (I went through the registry with
RegSeeker.)

PS: It has a pretty Camera Flash effect! :P

Sorry, it appears to be written in C#, one of the .Net languages which requires a framework to be installed on the host PC. Therefore it is not considered portable. See http://www.portablefreeware.com/faq.php. Thanks.

Yes, I tested it with Dependancy Walker and it uses the .Net framework...

Oh, i think it is not a good idea to write such software with .net language

i have used kind of screen capture software calledACA Capture Pro, i think it can handle it .

Really interested in having a GPL'd screenshot program so I took another crack at this. Version tested was 0.8.1-827 Beta, which listed some portable changes in the release notes, and there's a .NET file included inside the download. So there was plenty of reason to hope but my test results were not encouraging:

1. Current version lists no requirements for .NET and the site blog is unclear. I was unable to test this. I have a virtual machine without .NET installed but its also very stripped down, so I'm not 100%.

2. Tested on a machine *with* .NET. It looked up this .NET DLL C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\mscorrc.dll and wrote to this file: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\config\machine.config. Looks like it still needs .NET.

3. Wrote settings and a log file into AppData. Moving these files to the root folder didn't help.

Looks like this one is a bust.

It definitely needs .Net.
The settings are portable (if you move "config.dat" file into the app directory), but the log and another "titlefix.properties" file are still created in AppData\Greenshot.
No registry entries.
Supports relative paths for the Screenshots directory.

Not portable for me.

Excellent, thanks.

Thanks for checking.

Update: someone asked the authors to make this change. As mentioned above, I tested the mentioned "move the config file" trick without success.

A new build of the 0.8.1 series is out. There's no changelog for the new version so I don't know if they addressed portability issues. Softpedia lists it as "portable"

http://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-S ... shot.shtml

... but the site itself just names it as "no installer"

http://sourceforge.net/projects/greensh ... .8%20beta/

I'm not really sure this warrants rechecking it, but it is nice to see its still in semi-active development.

With the exception of Lightscreen Portable and ZScreen, there isn't an OSS screencap program here on the site, and both of those tools have their own issues. Greenshot has ~20 translations, requires only dotNET 2.0, and has a no-install version, which may indicate portability.

CNet gave this a very strong review
http://download.cnet.com/GreenShot/3000 ... 15306.html

As Andrew's post was previous to accepting dotNET applications, I'll move this back to the Submissions thread.

Tested this out over the last week. Uses about 17.5 megs RAM, but is remarkably elegant with most of the functions I needed right up front. Excellent program that's come a long way since I looked at it last.

To date I had been using the stable version but today I gave the development version a shot and was very impressed. Recent updates are easy, responsive, and available upload services bring it in line with ShareX.

Really lucky to have this.

This program saved my ass multiple times in the last 2 days. I had to add it to the database.
