Xmind is a "mind mapper." You can create diagrams and share your thoughts with other people with Xmind's servers. They provide a portable .zip package. Simply unzip and run.

I have a problem with a program that claims to be open source while it 'requires' you to login with your OpenID name and password to download. It strikes me as a harvest names and password scheme.

I understand your concern, but I'd also like to point out for accuracy's sake that OpenID isn't required - you can also sign up for an account with no verification of your email address, so you can bypass any privacy concerns by using a fake one, like I did. :)

One reason for "encouraging" you to get an account (other than possibly harvesting your contact info) is that one of the program's features is the ability to upload maps to xmind.net, which can only be made private if you purchase a "pro" account. It's a slightly sneakier monetizing scheme than the "pro" version of the software, but considering that they don't force you to use a real email address, I don't find it to be very invasive or obtrusive.

Cheers.

[Moderator note: this thread was split from another mind mapping tool, XMind.]

I am very happy with my JauntePE version of Edraw Mind Map free. Every tool and symbol is "right there", just drag-and-drop, everything seems so easy, creating a mindmap feels like a breeze!

This program saves a *lot* of settings to the registry. Saves around 150 or so settings to HKCU\Software\EdrawSoft\Edraw,1\Settings and 16 to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes. Where's the JauntePE version?

Sweet. I can't find anything on the Edraw site about a license or redistribution or I'd suggest making a web page that hosts the program + launcher.

[Moderator note: this was written after the above entries (because I forgot about it) and then merged after Joby pointed it out.]

----

Really slick looking mindmap program, but couldn't get it to work portably. Universal Extractor couldn't crack this so did the install/uninstall trick:

Procedure:
* Install
* Move from Program Files
* Also tried moving settings file to local folder without any change.

Results:
* Writes settings to \Application Data\Edraw Mind Map\Config: settings.xml and RecentTemplates.xml
* Appears to write to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Edraw.Template\

Maybe this will help.

Ah ... I didn't dig deep enough into the XMind thread -- I'll split them. Can't believe I forgot about that program only to retest it later...

Edit: split from XMind and then merged.

Launcher works great -- thanks very much, Joby. I also got to test out this Mind Map program and I'm very pleased. The various templates and graphics options really fire the imagination. I've recommended XMind to quite a few people, but I know they'd all probably get on board with Edraw's a lot faster.

Xmind is up to 3.3.1 ... looks mostly like a bugfix release:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-too ... MIND.shtml

I also merged the two XMind threads into one.
