Most importantly, this story tells us how dangerous a single web service account can be (iCloud in this case, but Google Accounts are pretty dangerous as well). With the iCloud account, the attackers wiped Honan's iPhone, iPad and MacBook remotely. :(

Another notable thing is that the attackers didn't crack anything. Not a single software exploit was involved. It was only social engineering.

(Given how dangerous a Google Account is [it can be used to reset passwords of countless services], I changed the password of my Google Account. The new one is randomly generated and a whopping 16 characters long. Good luck with cracking that. :P)

Wow! That's quite a pickle Mat Honan got himself into. All in all it took, what? 15 minutes? I'm mighty glad I don't depend on cloud services (or Apple, for that reason).

It's a huge advertisement for what we do here: not relying on Internet resources for [most] programs, self-contained, very easy to backup, and no thorny privacy issues.

Absolutely!

Some of the members here even virtualized their working environment, which I understand if done right works as a full automatic backup.

I'm not there yet, but here are my rules of thumb:

  • Separate system and data disks/drives;
  • Separate data from applications by avoiding proprietary formats as much as possibile;
  • Portability is the best strategy to ensure easy restoring -- it might even work across different platforms;
  • Cloud services are good, but not for your vital data -- after all, you wouldn't want to be asking your neighbor for the key to your own house, right?;
  • LOCKSS (Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Save) if you can... -- just make sure you can identify/access them easily, otherwise they're worthless.

Regarding Google, I have two main accounts: one is a backup drop basket, the other is associated with my Android smartphone -- the later will get changed whenever I change my phone... I look elsewhere for free webmail. And that amounts for one last rule: don't place all your eggs in the same basket... ;)

I always felt a bit squeamish about 'cloud apps' , given the huge privacy issues of giants like Facebook.com how is it better that more and more of our data and programs are in the cloud?

Besides how safe is it to let other people and websites handle your precious data and that all you really need to do to get that data is a username and password (among other authentication methods).

That's why I like Portablefreeware.com all your apps where you need them, with YOU!
