I tested this out for a few days. Its intimidating in terms of file managers and really not suitable for casual file management. Power users will be right at home.

Also, what's the portable install process? I ran Universal Extractor and that didn't seem to work.

You won't ever believe it.

First install it. You can do it even without admin rights.

Then open the "Help" menu.

The last entry of the penultimate section is "Install Multi-Commander on USB-device."

A potential USB-location is preset (anyhow it was the case on my computer). When you change it to a non USB-location, the installer will release a warning about it, but you will have the option to install it anyhow.

Tricky, huh?

BTW, in the forum of MC I have found a thread with a user's proposal asking for a plain portable package. MC's author wanted to look into that problem but his message was dated sometimes end of July. So it is still an open question whether there will be a portable package or not.

Lacks of internal file associations and that's a show-breaker to me. Otherwise great app.

This is great. I figured out that multiple filetypes are not separated by ";" but with a space: "*.jpg *.png". The online help is very laconic:

I ran MultiCommander x64 Portable V2.1.0 (Build 1030) from a non bootable hard drive and it is perfectly portable. The only thing I noticed outside the application folder was a _mc_ folder in AppData\Local\Temp\

MultiCommander is at v2.1.2 (Build 1045).

I ran Multi Commander v2.1.2 (Build 1045) 32bit on my Win7 x64 machine

Nothing in Regshot, only the empty _mc_ folder in %tmp%

I say add it, there's some robust code going on here!

Internal filetype associations are a bit tricky, especially when coming from Total Commander. Finally I found that this is the right syntax:

"${mcpath}\..\IrfanView\i_view32.exe"

The ">" button enables you to insert the "${mcpath}" variable, but in fact it pastes "${mcinstallpath}", so you have to manually modify it.

Another shortcoming is that it doesn't supports custom "Open with" actions (at least I haven't found a way).

Anyway, it is a very good file manager though I haven't used it for a longer time.
