Hi, Simon!

You are a quite analytic dude, mh! :)

That´s right: you have realized a part of the policy which resides behind TPFC. For better information about that you should ask Andrew directly...

Normally an app, which is discovered to be (almost) portable, is listed in the Database... then, in a while, someone gets the source and modifies it in order to let it run on removable devices... What has Andrew to do?

1) delete the original entry / add the new portable version
2) add both versions
3) maintain the old version and add only a link to the new one

I guess that normally Andrew uses the policy #3 and, sometimes, the #1

I think that #3 allows users to "intercept" updates faster... and it is not complicated/confusing as #2.

Actually I never talked about this with Andrew...
So, I think he can tell it better than me!

Officially portable?

I thought Socialist Sushi already went there. In fact they did, more than a year in advance! Haller's packaging is nothing more than a cheap knock off of much better software. I give it a zero.

I thought I'd toss you the linkage(though if you just typed "Socialist Sushi" in the firefox urlbar, you'd be there).

http://socialistsushi.com/portaputty

Last time I used something from haller that used a .reg file to store its settings, it didn't run correctly, the setting couldn't update, and it was writting those setting to the machine's registry. I wouldn't touch Haller's PuTTY with a stick.

I've been on PortaPuTTY since I first found it. I was looking for a portable solution for telent and when I actually read the PuTTY help files(OH Em Gee), I learned of PortaPuTTY. It is a very reliable solution, much more than Haller's "I think it's friend because it tiny enough to leave room on even the smallest usb drives" I could make a joke here, but I think this is at least an R-rated forum, and such a joke could have my whole response deleted/edited.

It may be tiny, but it'll make drive writes each time you use it. Again, I place an emphasis on using PortaPuTTY instead.

AlephX is right. I try to stick to the official release since it is more current, unless making the official release portable is too difficult, in which case I will point to the portable version directly
For example, VLC points to the official release, since making it portable involves an additional argument, which is no big deal. But the synopsis also mentions VLC Portable.

Another example: ClamWin. I used to point to the official release, but decided to switch to the portable version recently since the steps to make it portable is too complicated.

Well maybe I should mention that PortaPuTTY is the comeplete PuTTY bundle and Haller's is nothing more than the single PuTTY.exe with a NSIS wrapper.
I think being able to use most of PuTTY's best features on the fly counts for something. I'm going to state my opinion again, Socialist Sushi is better.

It's pretty pointless to reopen old threads like this, we get it already.
