WikidPad

I'm going to suggest this one. I haven't tested it out very much, but it's open source. It's pretty impressive. If you're into GTD and/or using a Wiki, it's rather neat.

Yup, no problems running it from my USB Drive. I don't know if it affected the registry or any folders though.

It writes settings (WikidPad.config) to the user profile folder. And you know how I feel about editor-type app that does that....

WikidPad - a "wiki"-type editor

#6 Post by flatlinebb »

http://www.jhorman.org/wikidPad/
and
http://wikidpad.python-hosting.com/

From the website:
"wikidPad is a Wiki-like notebook for storing your thoughts, ideas, todo lists, contacts, or anything else you can think of to write down.
Save the wikidpad.exe installation file to a temporary location on your PC. Run the file. The installer will ask you where you want to install the WikidPad application - the default folder is C:\Program Files\WikidPad, but you can install to any other location, including a removable drive - like an Iomega ZIP Drive or a USB "Thumb Drive/Flash Drive/Key Drive/Jump Drive". Installing to a removable drive means you will be able to operate your WikidPad files on any other PC that accepts that type of drive. The WikidPad files as well as its data files (files with a *.wiki extension) take up about 10MB on disk. The installer will offer to create shortcuts to the WikidPad program, and will also offer to run WikidPad immediately after installation."

I believe this program writes settings to the user profile folder when I last looked at it.

I see now, you are correct. I assumed the author has fixed this, but a quick test reveals otherwise. I tried searching the forums to see if this app was suggested before, but I didn't think to search the site itself.

wikidPad is a Wiki-like notebook for storing your thoughts, ideas, todo lists, contacts, or anything else you can think of to write down.

Even if not directly shown in the site, the application is portable, as stated in the (internal) help file:
1. Install WikidPad either directly on the stick or on the hard
drive. During installation you are asked if you want to
"Associate WikidPad with .wiki files" and "Handle URLs with
'wiki:' by WikidPad". Uncheck both options, they wouldn't work
with the USB installation anyway.
2. Start WikidPad.
3. Open the "About" dialog (in menu "Help") and scroll the shown
text down to the end. The configuration directory is mentioned
there.
4. Go with the Windows Explorer to this configuration directory.
5. Close WikidPad. After a short time you should see there a file
"WikidPad.config" and a directory ".WikidPadGlobals" (if they
are not already there).
6. Move file and directory to the directory where you installed
WikidPad.
7. If you installed WikidPad on hard drive, copy or move it to
the USB stick.
8. Start it from there by double clicking on the "WikidPad.exe"
file in the destination directory on the stick.
9. Repeat step 3., but this time the configuration directory
should be identical to the destination directory. If it is
not, something went wrong.

I like this app very much: I hope you will enjoy this too!
Marco :D

Anyone have tried Wikidpad(http://www.jhorman.org/wikidPad/)? I think it is a very good app to make portable. Thanks.

Thanks. I should have found it. Unfortunately, I misspelled the name as wikipad when searching. Sorry.
