Coccinella - Jabber IM, whiteboard, VoIP [discontinued]

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

It saves the Settings to a folder outside of the app folder. With help from a check in the options dialog.

Coccine!!a - IM client

#2 Post by Simon.T »

I see no-one checked this subject deeply...

Never-mind
Coccinella is a Jabber client with a builtin Whiteboard and has VoIP features optional. A recent update made this client portable with a simple preference option. Once checked the data is saved in a folder (Coccinella-prefs) outside of the Application folder.

A GPL'd, cross-platform multi-protocol tool with VOIP and whiteboard (available for many users in chat room).
  • Cross platform and at least claims to be portable on every platform ()
  • Plugin system, among them MeBeam plugin (video conferencing and a few other goodies)
  • Search people in dictionary
  • Avatars and emoticons, Themes
  • Secured connections (TLS and SASL)
  • QuickTime integration in whiteboard (Mac OS X and Windows)
  • Text-to-speech (Mac OS X and Windows)
  • Compression support to save bandwidth
  • Proxy support
  • Contact actions (buddy pounces)
  • Innovative auto-away features
  • 25 languages
The only negative I can find is that it doesn't support OTR encryption. Uses around 38 megs of RAM while running on Win XP SP3.

---

PORTABLE? Initial tests looks portable, but not stealth:
  • HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.jisp
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\im
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\jispArchive
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\xmpp
Make sure after following the portable instructions that you delete the app data folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Coccinella\

How to make Coccinella portable?
Wed, 24/09/2008 - 07:17 — sander

You can create a cross-platform portable Coccinella USB stick this way:
  1. Create a folder on the USB stick.
  2. Put in this folder the Coccinella binaries (for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X). Of course you do not necessarily need all binaries, for instance if you do not want to use the USB stick on Windows computers.
  3. Then open on each platform (Windows, Linux and Mac OS X) the binary for that platform.
  4. Go each time to Preferences and enable the checkbox option "Store preferences in same folder as program" (on the General page).
  5. Preferences will now be saved on the USB stick in the same folder as the binary.

Old thread update: this effort appears to have stalled. The last update was almost 5 years ago.

Most likely there won't be any more updates of Coccinella since after the leading developer of Coccinella died (Mats Bengtsson, a nice guy) there is no one to maintain the project. This is a shame since Coccinella is a solid Jabber client. It still works but it is getting older. I would be glad if there was a single developer who would take care of the project- just maintaining the code and releasing versions without any new features but compatible with newer OS.

That is really sad. One of the reasons I work in freeware is to celebrate the efforts by folks like him.

Additionally, this underlines one of the long term dangers to open source projects who may hinge on the presence of a charismatic leader. Though I think we're past it, there's more than one person who wondered in the early stages of Linux about whether it could survive without Linus Torvalds.

    • Ditto -- lest we forget we're all mortal here and that good work deserves to endure in time... :|

Definitely. There's a reason I (and many other folks here) spend a lot of time digging up mirrors and pulling from archive.org.
