[iRC CLIENTS] ntalk / nettalk (100% free + portable)
[Moderator note: this is the primary Nettalk IRC client program thread. View database entry]
----
after realling getting almomst sick for not finding a cool IRC Client which was small, portable (100%) and also was made for multi-server connections I at last found nettalk (http://www.ntalk.de)
I actually know this app already a long time. But I only found recently that it was 100% portable.
btw: I searched the forums + your website for "ntalk" and "nettalk" but didn't find any entry. so I persume this must be new to you.
the origin of this programm is german but you can get it in english to:
URL: http://www.ntalk.de/Nettalk/en/
DOWNLOAD: http://www.ntalk.de/Nettalk/Files/Nettalk6usb.zip (~ 500kb packed / ~ 1MB unpacked)
(using language files so it can be ported to any kind of language - i guess)
I checked the registry - I found only some entries, but which shouldn't be important (in my overview they only change your system making nettalk the default app for irc:// protocols etc. - so no config is saved in there).

yep, xchat ain't free for windows users - and that is what this page is about (at least what I think ).
and the irc clients here are:
a) not capable of connecting to more than one server
b) not working (at least for me)
c) outdated
d) write settings/logs into the application dir (so using this on some cafe, I would always have to delete them for privacy issues)
i don't think that its an issue if ntalk writes something (or any other programm) into the reg as long as it doesn't reveal personal informations..
anyhow. I talked to the programmer and he agreed with the issue. so he will be releasing in the future the portable version *registry-free*

FYI.
There is a freeware build of X-Chat for Windows,
it is called
X-Chat 2 for Windows

http://www.silverex.org/news/Its not portable though :/X-Chat 2 no longer uses GTK+ Runtime Environment—GTK+ libraries are included in installer. Uninstall previous versions of GTK+ and X-Chat to be sure that you will not get any incompatibilities.
The official version uses minigtk (just a small dll file inside the xchat folder)
http://xchat-win32.berlios.de/?page_id=6
Here's a list of builds of X-Chat.
http://silenceisdefeat.org.nyud.net:809 ... hat/win32/
"Static" in the list means no separate install of GTK is necessary. Which means, that you install X-Chat and GTK is linked in the build, meaning portable.
The only 3 listed as such, however, is the official build ($), one that is discontinued, and Sergio's.
http://www.larces.uece.br.nyud.net:8090 ... page=xchat
Sergio's is the one that I've been using.
BTW, apart from running the program with a command line switch
http://xchat-win32.berlios.de.nyud.net:8090/?page_id=5 is the link to his page for the patch itself. There's one for the Official build (if you pay for it) or for an .exe that you patch yourself (i.e. with UPX). THere's also a patch for all the other builds.
However, that person has stopped building X-Chat, and his website is pretty slow. So not telling how long that will last. And if it still works with a command line switch, then its just a bit more work, so its no biggie...
Hope something useful in there.

One of the above linked pages includes a patch that alters the program to default to ./config and ./downloads so no need to do it yourself. You can create a *.bat file with this in it and place it in teh same dir as your xchat binary.
Code:
xchat.exe -d ".\config"

And another:
http://pon.fr/index.php/portable-xchat- ... e-pour-irc
The page is in France, but by default, Xchat (or GTK) chooses your local language. The download link is in the end of the page.

Update:
kAlug, the creator of Chromium Portable, has created a PA.com wrapper for Nettalk:

Re: [iRC CLIENTS] ntalk / nettalk (100% free + portable)
I just tried the USB version from the website and it doesnt seem to make any registry entries at all.
(or any file system changes either)
I dont see a point to using a wrapper (,maybe a jpe launcher for security)
Its a nice little program tho, think I can finally drop mIRC.
apparently all you have to do is change the settings in the Runmode.ini:
singelusermode = 1
noregentry = 1

Old thread update:
Few notes...
Few notes...
- The screenshots look really sharp: http://www.ntalk.de/Nettalk/en/index.php?page=Screen
- Actively advertising functionality from a USB device: http://www.ntalk.de/Nettalk/en/index.php?page=Download
- Works with WinNT and after
- Appears to be seeing active development -- last updated 2 months ago as of this writing.
Re: [iRC CLIENTS] ntalk / nettalk (100% free + portable)
I wonder why Nettalk hasn't yet entered the collection- it is free, portable (the so-called USB version writes nothing to the registry and saves all its data and settings in its application folder), open-source and works fine (I have tested it on Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1). It is far better than the majority of IRC clients listed here and is not severely outdated. Nettalk is light, tiny, extremely easy to use, supports Unicode, has a nice interface and offers a decent set of feature.
The latest version of Nettalk is 6.7.16 (released on 30.10.2012).
How can I submit Nettalk to group "Internet - IRC Clients"? I do believe that Nettalk would be useful to many users.

See http://www.portablefreeware.com/faq.php#addapp. There is an "Add Entry" button at the top-right corner of the main site.smaragdus wrote:How can I submit Nettalk to group "Internet - IRC Clients"? I do believe that Nettalk would be useful to many users.

Nettalk
I added Nettalk to the database, please vote.
In fact as I once mentioned Nettalk was the first program in my submission list. It hasn't been updated for quite some time but it is still my favourite IRC client although there are other good portable alternatives (AdiIRC, HexChat)- Nettalk is very light, extremely easy to set up and has a nice GUI. I think it won't be an exaggeration if I say that Nettalk is better than at least half of the IRC clients already added to the database.
