Renamer - batch file rename tool

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Seems like just recently you posted the last update (less than a month ago) but the developer lists this as "major" and there are a long list of changes.

So this is my favorite renaming program and it just went non-commercial (I went ahead and updated the license on all the author's programs here on the site).

Anyone have an idea about an open source renamer program that might be portable?

Although last version is more than 3 years old, Ant Renamer is licenced under the GPL.

In reference to some of the entry comments pointing out that this program has gone crippleware.
  • Devs gotta eat and it only costs 10 Euro
  • Most devs aren't really in the habit of linking to previous versions of their software. It's nice when I see it (OSS devs almost always do it) but I don't expect it.
  • I've never used more than 5 rules or 5 presets.
  • I prefer this route over the nagware/adware route, although that's obviously not everyone's preference.
  • This is my favorite renaming program and one of my favorite programs overall. I wish more batch-type programs were built this way and I've sent it to developers as an example of how I think software should work.
Why I'm not okay with this:
  • Wish the author would have done a donation drive of some kind before charging
  • Remove the commercial use restriction for the lite version. If this is effectively trialware, that doesn't make much sense.
  • The author only allows PayPal for purchase, which sucks

I believe WinPenPack is hosting an older version that doesn't have the restrictions. Anyone have an opinion about whether we should switch to that or the lite version? Despite what I wrote above, I'm still on the fence here.

I'm torn, because I know in the past we (including myself) have been in an uproar when a developer goes payware. But in this instance he's still providing a free version albeit with a couple of (minor) restrictions. I would say still link to the current version, as the guy needs to eat!

Just a minor correction - 14.95 EUR. The 9.95 EUR shows while there is no program selected in the Product drop-down, but changes to 14.95 when you select Renamer.

IMHO, 14.95 is too much for a tool as common as a batch renamer, considering the large amount of freeware ones available. Someone suggested a lower price on the forums there (post #4 in this thread: http://www.den4b.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1827), but the dev rejected the idea. Oh well, it is his baby, in the end it is up to him as to what he wants to charge for it. If the current price does not work out, I expect the price will either come down, or development will cease (his news post on the change said that he almost gave up development on his tools here a little while back).

I've got 5.71 --These are the changes from the Internet Archive version 5.70--

ReNamer 5.71 (2013-08-20)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5.70.10 Beta
* Special unicode combining characters (e.g. COMBINING TILDE U+0303) are
handled correctly within Case rule when performing capitalization of words;
5.70.9 Beta
* Added "Capitalize AND Preserve" option to the Case rule, which acts like
"Capitalize Every Word" but it does not initialize everything to lower case
before capitalizing, hence, preserving most of the original case;
5.70.8 Beta
* White spaces are stripped from the registration code to prevent issues;
5.70.7 Beta
* Native string comparison function replaced with binary comparison
for highlighting changed names and clearing not changed files
so to work around the Windows API behavior that treats German
"sharp s" and "ss" as equal;
5.70.5 Beta
* Handle errors of all functions that use SHGetFileInfo API;
* Fixed issue with retrieving common documents folder on some versions
of Windows XP by replacing use of SHGetSpecialFolderLocation API
with SHGetSpecialFolderPath;
5.70.4 Beta
* Updated VirtualTreeView component to v5.1.3
5.70.3 Beta
* License file on Windows 9x/NT is stored in application folder
without vendor subdirectories;
5.70.2 Beta
* Rules statements converted to resource strings for translation;
5.70.1 Beta
* Added ID3_AlbumArtist meta tag;
I just wanted to say hello and give a bit of an explanation about the recent move to Lite and Pro editions.
The project simply could no longer survive without financial support. The full explanation and reasoning behind this unfortunate but a necessary move was published on the forum, please read it here if interested: http://www.den4b.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1851
ReNamer Lite has a limit of a maximum of 5 rules and 5 presets at a time. However, you can still remove them and create new once endlessly.
I hope that your disappointment due to limitations will be compensated by the continued development and support for years to come, rather than a dead project and complete abandonment of all products.
I am well aware of that site. I will certainly not going to blame or go after people for preferring to use the older version. Feel free to use it, but if you have a free minute please take it to read the post linked above.
