I have looked around and can't seem to find a way to manage what is on my favorites list. I know that when you vote for something it goes on your list, but is there a way to remove an item from your list? More specifically, can you remove something without negatively affecting that item as it appears on the main page? 8)

I assumed that would do it, but I would like to be sure that method will not harm the app's rating in general. Will it??? I would rather have a crowded favorites list than unfairly lower a good app's rating. :|

Is there no other way to select which apps are in my list?

Just to confrim, when you remove an app from your favorites list, the internal score for that app will be reduced correspondingly. Some apps _may_ become private again as a result of that operation.

Thank you Andrew. I believe I will leave my list as it is then.

Is there an easy way to add a non harmful removal option to the system?

It won't be easy. The only way is to come up with another function for this purpose.

The favorites system was originally designed to let you create your own mini search engine within TPFC i.e. when you see an app that is interesting and/or something that you think you could potentially use, you add it to your personal list which can then be searched later.

The system then uses this information in its aggregate to separate the gems from the chaff. The gems will then become public to everyone.

Now it seems like another system is required that stores the list of "known knowns" i.e. the real favorites that a user currently uses on a daily basis, versus the "known unknowns" i.e. the potentially interesting stuff that we want to share with the public anyway. Is this interpretation correct?

It not only sounds correct, it was phrased in a very intellectual sounding manner. :D I feel smarter just having read it.

To make sure I understand you:
When you implemented the voting system you made it so that the apps would go into the favorites list of that particular voter. The system would then use voting stats to compile a popularity score for each app, and when an app achieved a minimum score it would be deemed good enough to make it to the main database. The issue is that members are voting for apps they think fit the criteria of the site, and not necessarily apps that they would have any interest in themselves. So lists keep getting longer, filled with apps that members may never want to see again. In order to fix this you would have to spend many hours introducing a new sub function into the system that would separate apps a user voted for because he thought they fit the site criteria from the apps a user has a personal interest in tracking. Correct?

Unless you see this as a really good thing for the site, or you have been getting feedback on this issue from a lot more members than just me, I would advise you to shelve the idea for now. You have made a wonderful site and formed a great community. I don't think you need to put in so much extra work for what is ,IMHO, a relatively miner site refinement. :)

I personally don't use the favourites as a mini search system. So I am happy to have the apps that are Portable and the apps I like as one cohesive list.

Thanks. To attain this level of intellectual achievement, one needs to follow closely the wisdom of American politicians. :D

Yes. Your understanding is correct. Or to put it another way. If TPFC is _your_ site, what apps would you like to share with the public? Everyone probably has different criteria, but by aggregating different recommendations, hopefully a decent public list can be compiled. And hopefully the result is better than "Andrew says...".

Umm... I think using the words "wisdom" and "politicians" in the same sentence is in the same category as "military intelligence", there ain't no such thing. :D

And speaking as an American, I can say with certainty that American politicians are as dumb as they come.

well ive posted about this before, here, halfway down my post, :P
http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=23637#p23637

but yeah, id love to have a 'Favorites' list for the apps i like,
and a 'Submitted' list for the apps ive submitted to the database,

so when ppl hit my name theyll be taken to one of the list, most likely the 'Submitted' list,
but eitherway, one list would show all the apps ive submitted to TPFC,
and the other would show all apps in TPFC database the ive marked as my favorites,

I think these lists would make a great addition to the user profiles page.

Here's what I think I can do.

1) Introduce a checkbox in the submit page that says "Add to my favorites" that is by default checked. So if you are submitting something that for some reason you don't want to add to your favorites, just uncheck this box when submitting.

2) In the Suggested by XXX link that currently bring you to the list of XXX's favorites, link to a new page that lists all the apps that was submitted by XXX (and maybe a brief summary of the scores/status for each app). If you want to view XXX's favorites, you can use the search box as usual ("[XXX]").

What do you guys think?

It sounds like a definite improvement over the current system.

that works, ^-^
just two questions, one is being lazy, :P

to the 'Submitted by' page, can you just add in a search link to the Favorites page?
might be 'lazy' but not everyone that visits the page knows about the little search command,

and more out of curiosity, if you do that, is there an easy way to remove items that are already on your 'Favorites' page?
...and speaking of, would there be a way to add new apps that you havnt submitted to the Favorites list?
like i said though, just more curious then anything there,
