Opera useful (java)scripts and other tips&tricks

#1 Post by joby_toss »

As guinness suggested (Thanks!), I'll write here how you can install and use scripts with Opera browser (I'm assuming you use this browser in a portable way, 'cause ... you're here, aren't you? :) ):

1. go to your Opera directory;
2. enter your profile directory "Opera\profile";
3. create a folder called "userjs";
4. start Opera browser, write "opera:config" in your address bar and hit Enter;
5. in the Preferences Editor window, using the search field, search for "javascript" and you'll get something like this:
Image

6. make sure the highlighted fields look the same as in the screenshot above;
7. download the desired script (these files have ".js" extension) and save it in your newly created "userjs" folder ("Opera\profile\userjs");
8. restart Opera browser.

Note: disregard all the above quotation marks.

First example (go to the script's homepage, right click the "Install" button and choose "Save Linked Content As..."):

Linkify plus - Turn plain text URLs into links. Supports http, https, ftp, email addresses.
Version: 2.0.1

Tested with Opera 10.61 on win7x64 and Firefox 4 pre beta 6 with Greasemonkey 2010.09.10 beta (I'll mention if it works with Greasemonkey for FF, too, but Opera is the main subject here :) ).

P.S. if you use Greasemonkey, you obviously don't need instructions on how to use scripts with Firefox!

phpBB Quick Reply - A fairly basic quick reply function that should work for all phpBB forums with the standard theme installed.

Tested with Opera 10.61 on win7x64 and Firefox 4 pre beta 6 with Greasemonkey 2010.09.10 beta.

Enhanced Image Sizer - can fit image to view-port width/height or view image as is. But there are few more or less useful features.

Tested with Opera 10.61 on win7x64.

Great thread! Just a suggestion maybe in your first post explain how to install UserScripts for those that aren't familiar with Opera.

I think this was the post - http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 078#p24078

Nice tutorial. What program did you use to achieve the highlighting?

I'm pretty sure that's the editor inside Faststone Capture (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=775).

PicPick can do that by just creating a 50% transparent yellow box. However, it doesn't have that nice dropshadow. I still prefer PicPick however because it has an undo function.

Excellent! I know in the main subforum for is "Opera Portable," Checker used FastStone to capture a screenshot. Maybe I should check this out! I too use PicPick and have been happy with the performance of the software in the past.

Yes, FSCapture.
I have no "main" screenshot app! I use many at the same time (about ... 7). This time it happened to be FSCapture. :)

I have tried some userscripts from http://www.pallab.net/2010/07/06/opera-best-userjs/, i.e. the following: YouTube Downloader, Show Just Image, Document Viewer and NoDelay. Then I experienced some problems with sites that, I assume, use javascript for e.g. drop-down menus or picture galleries. It all worked again after having deactivated userscripts.

I have no experience with javascripts. (Maybe so I shouldn't have tried them?...) How I can I find out what's going wrong there? Well, with trial and error I could probably find out which one causes problems with which other one. But is there a beginner-proof and yet more elegant way?

I never knew how easy it is to create a new search in Opera, until I saw the info in the lower right corner of DDG page: :)

- right-click the search box (in the page of the search engine).
- select Create Search (the search address is automatically inserted).
- enter a key for keyword.
- hit OK.

I mentioned in the Opera 12 thread I would be posting some more tips and tricks and in the process came across this website >> http://www.aimwell.org/Help/Tips/tips.html

This Ghacks post led me to find an "Opera's NoScript alternative" called NotScripts.
