I wonder when 7-Zip will reach Final? And surely the version numbering system is outdated, because I thought it changed from 4.xx to 9.xx to represent 2009? I thought it would have migrated to represent 2010?

Checked the change log and noticed it's been in Beta since 2009-05-30.

I wanted to say that the developers are just having too much fun with the "cutting edge" version that they've forgotten about the stable one.

Unfortunately, that's not the case: it went from 4.65 to 9.04 beta pretty quick (http://www.7-zip.org/history.txt). Sort of reminds me of Java's amazing jump from 1.4 to 5.0 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_version_history)

I don't understand all these beta releases... I stopped upgrading at v9.15.
What's new:
  • - Disk fragmentation problem for ZIP archives created by 7-Zip was fixed.
    - Notes: 7-Zip now uses 4 MB RAM buffer as file cache, when you create ZIP archives. It reduces the number of Move_File_Position and Write_to_File operations.

It seems Igor Pavlov wants 7-zip 9 to be extremely stable when a final version is released. I don't update the components of Universal Extractor myself, Lupo73's unofficial revisions make life much easier. :)

@Checker: You're amazingly fast. Your post has a timestamp of 21 minutes before the official release of 7-zip 9.17 beta:
