Miranda IM is now up to version 0.8.4.
http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=128

The files have moved from SourceForge to Google Code, so the "download" link should be changed to:

http://code.google.com/p/miranda/downloads/list

The website is still http://www.miranda-im.org.

Cheers.

The last version 0.8.17 reports in the changelog "Installer now includes a portable mode option", so it could be tested and it could be updated the software description with this new support, if works fine.

AppCompactor (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1472) tested on it today. Using the default "safe" settings, it seems to work fine, but saves only about 200k so may not be worth the trouble.

Version 0.9.0 is available; and first official x64 version.
My observations:
- x64 zip version does not need "mirandaboot.ini" file to be portable; it saves the settings in "Profile" subfolder by default (I don't think this is true if the app's folder is in "C:\Program Files", but shouldn't be a problem). It is also stealth.
- x86 zip version still needs the file "mirandaboot-example.ini" renamed to "mirandaboot.ini" and the line "ProfileDir=" changed to something like "ProfileDir=.\Profile". It is now also stealth.

Great news and thanks.

Is a "portable" choice still available at install?

Yes, it is. But I don't like to look at installers if zip files are available. :)
In this case the file "mirandaboot.ini" is auto-created, but the line "ProfileDir=" is actually "ProfileDir=Profiles" (the folder "Profiles" is also auto-created).

Update applied. I think I may have ended up making the instructions MORE complex and annoying rather than less. Everybody who visits the site is going to choose the installer method.

Still, I prefer ZIP versions too and I'd rather have more information than less.
