TaskSwitchXP

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

TaskSwitchXP

#1 Post by webfork »

UPDATED POST
  • After coming back to this topic and trying to retrace my steps, I realized how confusing this whole thread is so I decided to add a quick howto on getting this program to work. Typing in X-TaskSwitchXP in Google brings up this page first anyhow so it might as well be the home page.

    The program's status as fully portable is still tentative but here are the steps to get X-TaskSwitchXP working correctly.
    • 1. Download WinPenPack's X-TaskSwitchXP
      http://www.winpenpack.com/en/download.php?view.666

      2. Unzip to a folder of your choice and open X-TaskSwitchXP.ini in any text editor

      3. Find these lines:

      • FileCopy=$Temp$\x-default|$ExeDir$\lang\Italian.lng

        $AppName$\2.0|"LangFile"="Italian"
      • ... and add a semicolon (or just copy and paste the below entries in their place)
      • ;FileCopy=$Temp$\x-default|$ExeDir$\lang\Italian.lng

        ;$AppName$\2.0|"LangFile"="Italian"
    The program should work normally; although the program before would continually revert back to Italian language defaults, you should not have to edit this config file again for other settings changes.

ORIGINAL POST:
  • Non portable home page.

    Fluffy mentioned this program a while back.

    What about VistaSwitcher?

    The "new" version, VistaSwticher is prettier, but takes up way more memory and is definitely not portable. It turned to a bunch of unreadable files when I threw Universal Extractor at it.

VistaSwitcher writes to the Registry, which I was disappointed about. Right now I have a WinPenPack version of TaskSwitchXP which cleans up the Registry, but I always prefer a native portable application.

Unfortunately, it keeps forgetting the settings on system restart. I keep restarting and suddenly its all back in the default Italian.

I've persisted with this program just because it 3 things I absolutely love:

* Very low disk and ram footprint (less than a meg!)
* Right-click minimize-to-tray ability
* Alt+tab with a preview window that's mouse-interactive window (can click on what I want rather than cycling through a long list).

I'll try emailing the author, although I'm guessing he's focused on the new version (VistaSwitcher).

NTWind Forum wrote:The problem is that the portable version will never work with elevated applications on Windows Vista and Windows 7 because of UAC. In order to work with those applications (Registry Editor, Computer Management, etc) VistaSwitcher must be installed in C:\Program Files\*** directory.

I think I figured it out: in X-TaskSwitchXP.ini:

1. For "Ini Locale=it", delete "it"
2. Put a ";" (semicolon) in front of these two lines:

Code: Select all

  FileCopy=$Temp$\x-default|$ExeDir$\lang\Italian.lng

  $AppName$\2.0|"LangFile"="Italian"

The author just put out a maintenance release: http://www.ntwind.com/blog/vistaswitche ... lease.html

Despite this update, the author is actively encouraging users to switch to another version. The program is unsupported on Vista and Win7, I've set it aside. However, low resource usage, never crashes, customizable and ease of use have all made this one of my favorite programs on the site. I'm almost always running it.

Would anyone on the site like to see this added to the database?
