KeepNote is a note taking application that works on Windows, Linux, and MacOS X. With KeepNote, you can store your class notes, TODO lists, research notes, journal entries, paper outlines, etc in a simple notebook hierarchy with rich-text formatting, images, and more. Using full-text search, you can retrieve any note for later reference.

It stores notes in HTML Files.

KeepNote is an Open Source Project and build on Python.

Very cool program - can see a lot of uses in combination with mindmap software. Very cool.

By portable we mean a "noinstall" version, which the website doesn't have.

For example, TheGuide (a similar software) *claims* to be portable. So far KeepNote does not and doesn't list a "portable" download for us to test.

http://theguide.sourceforge.net/

That said, Universal Extract so far seems a pretty good start and seems to work great, but I have not tested whether it is "registry green". I can't figure out how to make the platform-independant one work on Windows so I don't know if that's the "portable" one.

The Windows installer version does not write to the registry, but creates bunch of files in appdata:

Could this behavior be changed?

Thanks for checking into that. I found a real use for the program but now think I'll use The Guide instead.

Edit: The Guide got on my nerves. KeyNote NF (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=755) is clearly the king of the pile. Good lord its cool.

Edit #2: Okay KeyNote NF? Real crashy. Trying original Keynote.

No changelog for that version (and several before it) -- not really sure I want to retest something where its not clear whether or not crashiness has been addressed.

Have you used it? Is it stable yet?

I don't use it on a daily basis.
I keep only notes about desired items for my online shopping.
I had no crashes, though.

KeepNote impressions:

RAM while open: 30 megs
Disk use: 26 megs

Good:

* Open source, cross-platform, actively developed
* HTML export looks good. I can see someone working on this, wanting to share it, and the recipient having no difficulty at all using it. I think this would be a very good help file creator (except for the exported data's lack of a built-in search function).
* Each notebook gets its own place in the settings menu with its own font and font size. I like that.
* Autosave every 10 seconds by default

Bad:

* Doesn't start with some kind of window explaining the program. Non-techy users would just see an empty window that doesn't do anything and not know to do a File - New to get started. Its a small issue.
* Doesn't store files with relative pathways. So if you open a file, close it, move the folder, it will start blank.

Gave this another shot yesterday -- was very crashy on a Win7x64 machine.
