Odd, your post came to my feedreader with more information, but it's not here - that TrueCrypt and other disk encryption software require admin. rights to install drivers, which won't work for you.

Without admin access, you might be limited to encrypted archives. You can use PeaZip or 7-Zip for that.

Cheers,
Joe

@ashghost search for TrueCrypt | TPFC

TCExplorer
Synopsis: TCExplorer allows you to import, export, delete, and rename files in TrueCrypt containers without needing admin rights. This is basically a GUI for the wonderful OTFExplorer by tateu.

Question: I can encrypt a bunch of files, but I can't protect this encrypted file from deletion?!

Am I wrong?

By "lock" do you mean encryption or setting it as read-only?

> TCExplorer

To my knowledge, the author hasn't kept up with the latest TrueCrypt changes because TCExplorer doesn't work with the current version of TrueCrypt. Therefore, the best alternative is Probably FreeOTFE http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=698, which doesn't require admin rights.

http://www.freeotfe.org/main_explorer_differences.html

FreeOTFE
  • Can be used in "portable mode" which allows full functionality without having to be installed. However, because this involves starting device drivers, starting portable mode does require Administrator privileges.
FreeOTFE Explorer
  • Driverless operation means it can be used by any user, anywhere - with no special requirements!

By the way, this program seems to be a lot more portable than the regular FreeOTFE. It even has an option in the "tools" menu to "copy to usb drive." That's definitely a feature for people like us in mind. Maybe FreeOTFE explorer should be in the official database?

true... to install

but TrueCrypt has a 'traveler mode'. When running setup choose the 'extract' option.

With USB drive you can load a portable version of windows and encrypt to your heart's content.

until then try: Chaos Mash

You might also find a few creative uses for WildCrypt

I use half a dozen of this guy's freeware -- most notably DVDsig.

DSCrypt is here on the site:
http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=223

Safehouse looks pretty good, but having security programs whose internals are available is important, as with TrueCrypt and FreeOTFE. There's a reason that when they were coming up with a new encryption standard a few years ago that all five finalists were open source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_E ... rd_process.

Truecrypt's "traveller mode" is bogus - you still need administrator rights to start it in "traveller mode", which makes it next to useless for portable use

I know one app that is probably relevant to what you want. It is called Hopedot VOS, a virtual operating system. The best about it is that you can import all your apps and files into it and run it on any device. of course, anything within it has been encrypted. so you may have a try on it.
