Forum upgraded to phpBB V3

#1 Post by Andrew Lee »

This is long overdue, but I have finally taken the plunge and updated phpBB to version 3 (we were running version 2) before.

Although I have spent a lot of time preparing for the move, as with changes of this magnitiude, there are bound to be problems. Please be patient and PM/email me any issues that you come across, and I will fix them as soon as I can.

Meanwhile, enjoy the new eye candy!

[EDIT]I was created a poll to find out your board style preference. Please participate and let your voice be heard![/EDIT]

Looks terrible.
Is there a way to improve it at least a bit?

OK, after browsing the forum for a while I have some more valuable comments:
-Topic icons, I find them much less readable then the previous ones. And it's not that that I'm just not used to them, because I am a regular browser of several pbpBB3 forums and some use them too. And they are just ugly.
- Text-Background contrast dropped considerably with this *cough* *cough* upgrade.

I think that these 2 were the main reason for my very bad first impression. Further comments:

- Avatars on the right. No forum I know has it this way, therefore I find it uncomfortable, text is not where I lay my eyes first. I think I could get used to it, but why force all users to do it? And it's especially bad for casual users and newbies.
- I don't know why, but in this thread I have phpBB3 off, though it's on in my CP and it was on in another thread I replied in today.

Ugly indeed, more screen space wasted. But most annoying is topic poster info is in right and info is also below the topic.

Another annoyance: "Mark this forum read" moves horizontally depending on subforum chosen, so I can't just switch tabs and click.
It's something I do often, so this is a big deal for me.

I've always hated the default phpBB v3.0 theme!

Here's a couple of skins I think look neat:
Serenity - http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/Serenity
xabbBlue - http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/xabbBlue

Maybe we should gather all the phpBB v3.0 themes we think look good and hold a poll.
Most votes = new theme! :)

This board is using the default phpBB3 theme "prosilver" (though I have renamed it and made some changes to incorporated the logo, ad and rss feeds).

Or would you guys prefer me to switch to the other phpBB3 style "subsilver2" (which mimicks the default style in phpBB2)?

I did some research before the switch, and it seems that people do prefer prosilver to subsilver2.

How about letting users choose with a poll for the default?

An option to switch would be fine, too.

subsilver2 looks much more intuitive ... easier on the eyes.

well I could design a theme base it off of subsilver2 for you guys and make it a Portablefreeware style :)

I'm working on a style on http://zachthibeau.com/ right now as we speak (some issues but soon to be resolved) and it's coming along nicely. based off of prosilver though :)

I'm with Zach and Checker... at least at the bare minimum allow the user to change the board theme in our user control panel.
