"Everything" only uses file and folder names and generally takes a few seconds to build it's database.

Synopsis: "Everything" is a search engine for Windows.
"Everything" replaces the windows search with a much faster one.
Unlike Windows search "Everything" initially displays every file and folder on your computer (hence the name "Everything").
You type in a search filter to limit what files and folders are displayed.

How to extract: Download the installer and extract using Universal Extractor to a folder of your choice. Delete $PLUGINSDIR and [NSIS].nsi.

Create a blank file Everything.ini, paste these four lines and save:

Well, I was hoping for "yes", since the supported systems are 2000 and up. (It might work on Me, 9x as you indicated).

"Everything" is actually portable (no reg writes) and it returns results instantly.

First of all i did not intend to be offensive! I truly believe Locate32 is better (for me at least).
Second: Locate32 is built around the same idea - searching a database created by indexing files, so the search results are also shown instantly (even progressively "as you type").
Advantages for using Locate32:
-indexes also Fat32 volumes (most USB flash drives), CD's, DVD's etc;
-ability to work with multiple databases;
-command line version;
-can be used with a Find And Run Robot plug-in;
-can be used as keyword for Executor;
-can be also made portable;
-ability to search files by size, date, type etc.
-can search only for files, only for folders or both;
-can search files content;
-ability to backup the database;
-calculates MD5 sums so you can find duplicate files;
-keyboard shortcuts;
-ability to not show hidden and system files;
-one can set another file manager than Explorer to open folders;
-custom system tray icon;
-can save results;
-many more that i surely overlooked.
Advantages for Everything:
-it's damn fast, so i'll keep it around and treat it as Locate32's little brother .

i'm a Locate32 fan as well... here's what i think of Everything.

Advantages of Everything:
-extremely fast indexing of files to database compared to Locate32
-HTTP and ETP/FTP server to access files (handy for some, not for me!)
-smart memory usage when minimized

Disadvantages to Everything:
-no option to hide hidden and system files
-no manual update function when "run in background" is disabled!

I think this is definitely important for those that only want to manually update their database on occasion. Locate32 offers this option.

@joby_toss: i never thought of using Locate32 with Executor! I should definitely look into that!

@Drutt: if I put Everything on my USB flash drive (with "run in background" and "monitor changes" options active") and use it on another computer, will it automatically index the new hard disk ? That would be great ! (Sorry for this question but i have no way of testing this soon enough.)

thx, been using this for a few days and i like it

Can't test it either I'm afraid, but I assume when you put your USB in the 2nd computer, Everything will index the db again, treating it as a new db (i.e. over write the 1st computers db). Put it back in the 1st computer and it'll re-index the db again.
Untested though, maybe someone can test this...

Sorry for the delay!
I have tested on another machine and YES it does re-index the new hard drive automatically! It was a 250GB hdd and about 200 000 files that took under 10 second to index!

I've tried to use Everything without success. It doesn't start indexing. From the help file, it appears it does not support FAT32 volumes. My only Windows machine came as WinXP on FAT32; I have no good reason to change.
