Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

One way to look at the frequent updates is as reminders to check your HD to see if it needs defragging. At least, that's what it does for me <smile>

np

And thanks for the note
Please, note that the screensaver version of JKDefrag is not portable (files: JkDefragScreenSaver.exe and JkDefragScreenSaver.scr).

JkDefrag GUI

#50 Post by spaztastic »

A GUI (Graphical User Interface) for JkDefrag. You have to download the regular JkDefrag and copy it to the directory of this app and then run JkDefrag GUI. It will download necessary files. JkDefrag GUI adds features such as:

- Allows you to choose the defragmentation method.
- Allows you to choose the drive to defrag.
- Allows you to defrag the pagefile.
- Includes cleanup features and auto defrag options.

You can download it at:

There's already a link to it (the author's site: http://www.emro.nl/freeware/ ) on the JKDefrag entry in the database:

Cheers, :)

That is JkDefrag, not JkDefrag GUI. JkDefrag GUI is an addon for JkDefrag. You download JkDefrag and save it. Then download JkDefrag GUI, unzip the archive and copy JkDefrag to that directory. Then run JkDefrag GUI and it will automatically download the files it requires. Once that is done, JkDefrag GUI will load and you can then use it with it's user-friendly interface.

It's an add-on for JkDefrag, does it deserve it's own entry :?:

I think it deserves a spot. It adds a lot more elements to JkDefrag than it normally has.

Spaz I'm interested to hear which of the added features you mean. This is true interest. I going to guess that Scheduled Defrags are not one of the features you mean because that (just logically) doesn't really speak to portability (or maybe it just doesn't speak to stealth I don't know, I mean if you consider portability the fact it's not installed and You can put it on a external and still have schedules but still that feature iffy portability)

Here are the Other features listed on the site:
  • install JkDefrag or it's screensaver (huh?)
It can be used to schedule a defragmentation of your systemfiles like pagefile and registry files. (mmm more scheduling feature see above )
JkDefragGUI also supports CCleaner which can be used instead of the internal cleaning function. (where does it store the setting for this will it also link to portable ccleaner; if so how does it recognize drive letter changes?)
It can also erase any information which is left behind on your harddisk after erasing files. (such as and in what ways is this separate from ccleaner)
That said, developer does state wrote:JkDefragGUI is compatible . . . U3 memory pens and with BartPE pre-installed environment.
And all-in-all it seems like a good frontpiece to JKdefrag and Andrew does include it in the description but ummmm separate line seems overkill.

Features:

- Choose defragmentation method
This allows you to choose to analyze, defrag, optimize, move to end of disk, etc. which expands that use of the program.

- Choose debug level
Useful for diagnosing problems that JkDefrag encounters while attempting to defrag the sleceted disk.

- Choose speed (priority)
If the main process that is running is JkDefrag, bump up the priority so that it completes faster and vice versa if you are working on the computer while the program is running.

- Choose disks to defrag individually
That way the program does not defrag a drive that doesn't need it or that shouldn't be defragged. For example, running this off of a USB flash drive will prevent the USB drive from being defragmented which will decrease the life span of the drive.

- Install to host computer
So that a seperate setup file doesn't need to be carried. Use this option to provide the owner of the host computer with a reliable defrag option.

- Systemfiles defragmentation
It can be set to run once which then can be ran while the portable device is plugged in. Also, if you install this app to the host computer, you can then set it to run every boot for maximum optimization.

- System cleanup
Cleans the system of unnecessary files before defrag. Also includes a registry defrag (NT RegOpt)

@nycjv321: it does add a GUI, but it's sorely lacking compared to JkDefragGUI.

portableapps.com are starting to sound ridiculous to me...

they port already portable programs instead of focusing on the important stuff.
