Ed - A tiny dark-mode editor for RTF files

#1 Post by svenfaw »

Ed is a tiny, extremely minimal dark-mode editor for RTF files.
Do not expect perfection as it is still in early development. :)

Features

Code: Select all

Super minimal UI: no buttons, no toolbars, no menus!
No-distraction fullscreen mode
Very few features, by design
Works best on simple (up to 2MB, text-only) rich text documents.

Hi @svenfaw, welcome back (from good old :cross: Forkle memories...😢 )

Nice first try for your minimalist ED RTF editor, which looks nifty and signally terse indeed ... 8)

Brings to mind indispensable daily workhorse Qjot , from which a few initial(...?) suggestions are ventured:
(yet trying to refrain from the dreaded creeping featuritis...)

• 1 Menu: Itching for a basic top line menu, optional to keep with the bare-bone design spirit ("CTL-M" on/off toogle ?)
• 2 Text color options
• 3 Strikethrough shortcut (SHFT-S would be dandy)

Can't wait to discover ED forthcoming evolution...;-)

Cheers,
__philippe

Hi there, svenfaw, and thanks for sharing ed with us. 8)

From my brief testing and trying to keep up with the perceived project goals, a couple of suggestions:

- Unlike __philippe, I'd settle for the standard context menu with standard options and a few extras, like toggle case, wordwrap and time-stamping (ISO or user chosen format);
- OFC, those options should have their own dedicated keyboard shortcuts;
- Import/export to plain text would also be very welcome, inasmuch as it would make ed a specialized viewer/converter;
- Not sure if it fits with above mentioned goals, but auto URL activation would be a big plus in my book;
- Inclusion of a conventional 'readme.txt' file apart from the 'hints.rtf' would also improve the user friendliness of the program towards novel users (e.g., I uploaded a sample at https://hastebin.skyra.pw/raw/xalojoxoji).

Lastly, is the 2MB file limit hardcoded? With images, for instance, it can easily be exceeded.

Hi @__philippe, @Midas,

Many thanks for your interesting (and entertaining) feedback!

I do plan to improve Ed, though not at a very intense pace, as I unfortunately have very limited spare time these days.

That being said:
- Automatic URL activation is already implemented and will be included in the next release.
- Copy to clipboard as plain text is already implemented and will be included in the next release.
- Strikethrough is ctrl-shift-S, and word wrap is ctrl-W. I see these shortcuts are missing in the hints file - Will fix that shortly.
- Work is in progress to implement text colors and text size
- 2MB is currently not a hard limit, but performance will be optimal below that threshold
- Still undecided between a menu bar and a context menu - all bets are off :)

Great! 8)

:idea: Regarding Automatic URL activation and as it's often overlooked, please include "mailto:" protocol for default email client -- or better yet detection of plain email addresses (contiguous non-blank character strings containing "@" and dots[?])...
