Using 7-Zip to make some programs portable?

#1 Post by Albert90 »

Hi! While looking more into portable software the other day, I came across this guide for converting an install-only application to a portable application by simply extracting the contents of the setup file and running it as if it was installed.

And it didn't quite rub me the right way because that seems like a pretty half-arsed method to make an app portable, and I doubt it even works for all apps. I guess I just wanted to run it by you guys and ask if this is actually a viable way to go about doing such a thing.

One major caveat is stated right there near the end of the article:
If, for example, an installer copies files to multiple locations, registers DLL’s or creates registry entries required for operation, these steps will obviously not be completed using the above methods.

Another one, and one that goes unmentioned, is what happens to settings, either written to registry or to configuration files. As posited, the procedure is more of a no-install guide than really about portability, IMHO.

Right yeah, makes sense. I guess I just find the idea of making a program portable pretty interesting. I'd love to hear more viable ways to go about doing that sometime.
