Haven't been seeing many such devices since the heyday of the UMPC...

I have owned Acer Aspire Switch for several years and use it for travel. Fairly light weight, cheap, great battery life and can be used either as a laptop or tablet.

Thank you.
Personally, I find the sweet spot for tablets to be around the 8" display size, going above it quickly gets to be an encumbrance (and I do have big hands); laptops are a different story, of course.
One of the reasons the GPD device did pique my curiosity...
EDIT: Apparently only recently did the
GPD Pocket device finally become available, so here's a video review.

Apart from the keyboard issue, it looks really cool. I like the 8gigs RAM.

GPD produced a complete line of business and gaming micro PC over the last 3 years.
I was very inclined to get one of these models but after browsing a boatload of reviews, one complaint
clearly stuck out : batteries !
Main concern is battery quality seems to be on the low side.
And it seems difficult to find replacements for these.

I guess they're *good* batteries? I guess a 18650 battery is a good one?
Anyway, this takes me back to one of the earliest mini-computers I've ever seen from the late 80s. The super wide screen and what is otherwise just a keyboard. I can't track it down, but it definitely saw a lot of use long before the internet. I can imagine a lot of uses for this.

18650 batteries, absolutely. You can find these everywhere. And they're "hot-swappable", meaning that as long as there is one battery powering the device, you can remove the other battery to replace it by a fully charged one.

As a kind of a follow up on the OP, I recently came across this piece concerning the GPD:
So what do I like about it? Why would I reach out more for a device that has sub-par performance, a screen that you have to squint to notice anything on, and an uncomfortable keyboard?
