#2 Post by donald »

Check out this taken from the website itself it says it is natively portable but it abandons all but the latest OS's

Version 3.0.16.1718.RC1
Support Help speed up the development of TheSage
Released July 30th, 2008
Size 16.7 MB
OS Windows XP/Vista (9X/2K no longer supported)

Notes
- No installer provided.
- Unzip and run from anywhere (fully portable).
- Side-by-side use with previous versions of TheSage is safe.
- No documentation in RC1.

Features
- Everything TheSage 1.x.x had and...
- Up-to-date database.
- Phonetic transcriptions.
- Text-to-Speech.
- Definition/example concordancer.
- Online search.
- Phonetic wildcard search.
- 'As you type' tool.
- Similarity tool.
- Spell-/sounds-like assistant.
- Customization options galore.

Disabled in RC1
- Hotkey (word capture).
- User dictionary.
- Check for updates.

And 2.x.x?
TheSage 2.x.x grew to some dozen utilities that, while useful for research (ours, in particular), were unsuitable for public release.

After much going back and forth, a decision was made to abandon the 1.x.x/2.x.x codebase and to design 3.x.x from scratch.

Let us know what you think.

The original Sage worked well in Wine with Linux and in Darwine on a Mac. The new version will not even launch.

my question is

#5 Post by donald »

my question is
can both versions be listed???
could someone ask Andrew Lee?

I would imagine a double listing like Firefox or Opera

these mention an alternative version The Sage would need that and

the mention of the OS support

Good idea :!:
I think the old version should be available for dowload, too.
Running on Win95/98/ME/2000 and on Linux (as lajjal said).

So far I'm liking the latest version, the interface is more streamlined, and much better looking.

It supports Windows XP at the very least, which make sense seeing as the other operating systems are almost 10 years old and are no longer supported by Microsoft and other venders (no hot fixes, etc). The 1x version is still available for download, so get it if you need it.

Version 3.1.2.1744
Tested: Portable and stealth as far as I can tell.

This program has sparkling reviews (FWG) so it should definitely get into the database. I'll add it within the week if no one else does.

TheSage is @ V4.0.1774

http://www.sequencepublishing.com/thesage.html

The installer now has a portable mode.

Requirements: XP, Vista, 7
Settings: TheSage.ini in Application Folder

Can someone test on older Windows OS?

Ugh. Why would download.com host such a dramatically older version? Must remember to always go to the source.

I'll do a retest of the newest version soon on XP. I have little doubt it will work smoothly.
Yes, there was some talk of posting two versions of the program, which I didn't read as carefully as I should have. I don't see any reason to keep the old RC entry there and start another.

@webfork

I did test on XPSP3 but the DB entry that joby_toss pointed to indicates support for Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K. Maybe someone can test if the newest version still works on them.

Some of the new apps features require unicode :!:
So it won't work on older OS versions (Win9x etc.)
