Freeware Ontology Managers

#1 Post by Midas »

This is a rather specific topic, devoid of any interest for the majority, so I'll be succinct.

On cue from an earlier post (http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 721#p82721), I did a quick check for the nth time and here are those from among my results that lie closer to portability...
  • OWL is the W3C's Web Ontology Language. Model Futures have developed a simple OWL editing tool, and are looking for willing Beta testers. This software is pretty new and untested, so you'll be helping us to find the bugs.
It was 2006 then and it seems not much happened since, but OWL Editor is a basic single executable editor with no visible dependencies. Download (from the homepage above) requires an email address, the latest version being v0.2.0.36.
  • No more scrolling through long and cryptic text files or seeing only one item at a time. With OWLGrEd you can see your whole ontology at a glance. OWLGrEd is easy to understand and use even for "non-ontologists".
OWLGrED is Java dependent but a cut-down version is included in the download package, vouching for its potential portability; download latest version (v1.6.1): http://owlgred.lumii.lv/get_started#Download.
  • KMgen is an ontology editor. An ontology describes the concepts and relationships of a particular knowledge domain, while specifying vocabulary and semantics for that domain.
KMgen depends on Java which must be provided separately -- I'm guessing jPortable would work pretty well. More info about the Knowledge Machine 'language' can be garnered from http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/mfkb/RKF/km.html. KMgen latest release (currently v1.55) can be downloaded from the homepage above.
