An interesting and useful trick (if it still works; I haven't really tested) for converting MP4 to AVI without re-encoding is explained at viewtopic.php?t=3172.

FYI, the SUPER converter mentioned in the body of the topic above has been removed from TPFC's database, but many portabilized versions of programs mentioned in this topic can be found at ThumbApps.org.

EDIT: a rather interesting newcomer is Python based Flowblade (http://jliljebl.github.io/flowblade/) -- unfortunately, the following is what the homepage currently says about non-Linux versions...
http://jliljebl.github.io/flowblade/download.html wrote:Windows and OS X are not supported. Flowblade has focused on providing the best possible experience on Linux and other free platforms.
EDIT2: another highly related and relevant topic is at viewtopic.php?t=22930 ...

And for a portable launcher for pcfreetime.com Format Factory, see viewtopic.php?t=21279.

Lastly, some time ago yet another conversion utility called QtlMovie was posted to "Submissions" at viewtopic.php?t=23111.

Natron is FLOSS under GPL2 currently at v2.3.13 (changelog at https://github.com/NatronGitHub/Natron/releases/).

Mirror at https://sourceforge.net/projects/natron/.

Natron looks really cool, with lots of YouTube tutorials online.

My eldest child is looking to experiment with video compositing, but we obviously cannot afford AfterEffects, so this will come in really handy!
