Quick update: those weary of touching the Windows system registry to perform the hack referred above, can now use pXc's DotNET v.3.5 XP Update Extender...

• XP Update Extender allows you to receive updates for Windows XP until 2019. Therefore all it does is to set a registry key pretending to be a version of XP Embedded called "POSReady". It does not modify any system files.

About XP Update Extender, if you're running Windows XP, is it likely that you're running the bloated .NET 3.5 framework?
