Betaclock doesn't really work as portable. Why?

#1 Post by portapotty »

http://www.betaclock.com/

I'm trying to make this program portable. I'm creating it using Thinapp using the normal method. When the portable exe is created and run, the actual clock doesn't display. The program runs fine in the background, I know this because if I double-click the exe again, the preferences window pops up and everything is working fine. But the actual clock display in the tray never shows up. i don't know why.

The only thing I know about the program as far as how it works is that it overlays a clock over the normal windows tray clock. I have a feeling that with the portable, the clock is behind the windows clock instead of in front of it, or something like that. Is it not possible to use this program as a portable?

Try TClock light. It's natively portable: and works great

I'm not about to download that software from a web page with nothing more than a download link. Reputable developers supply some information about their downloads.

I appreciate the response, but could you please offer suggestions for betaclock? I really like that program. I'll use tclock, no problem, I'm just wondering why betaclock won't work.

As far as the developer goes, he's legit. I've written an extensive review of the program and my knowledge of the history of his website:

I think his website is minimal because someone else was ripping off his program and selling it.

Thanks for the further details. I know next to nothing about Thinapp. Sorry for my hasty reply - I guess I should have Googled first.

Are there other ways to create portable apps?

Yes, legal ones. And you've already had a suggestion on how to do it at the 'other church' (portableapps.com).

Perhaps I've been too harsh.
If you are one of the licensed users of Thinapps, I'd suggest their support line. For the cost of thinapps, the support should be great.

I will try doing this with legitimate methods. If I still had the contact info of the author, I'd ask him to make the app portable himself, but I'm afraid he might have given up on the program by now. Good program, it's a shame.

JauntePE launcher (instructions inside):

Please remember to check "Show the clock" checkbox in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties!
Tested on WinXPProSP3.

Good luck!

Also, sorry about not reading the guides. I have not made portables before, i should have known there are detailed guides out there on sites like these.

That is cool. I need to learn how to do that. It works.
i wasn't able to find any of the files shown in the picture for the Data directory. But even without them, it's working well. Thanks.

[edit] actually it seems like those files are created after running the program
