hello, um does any know how i can get avg free to be portable? i need to use multiple virus scanners for system cleanup on a friends computer, plus i'd also want backup antivirus for my own use, but i dont want to install it, on mine or my friends, he's bogged down becuase of malware, and i already have an antivirus installed, it's preferable to have the full program, rather then a online scanner, or slimmed down on, cause will clean out, then use it on usb drive for his other computers, his networked got hijacked.. :P, not too bad though..

i extracted the installer but all i got was junk cause the settup is customade, anyone know how to make it portable??

I think it's unlikely you can make it portable.

This is an alternative:

i am inclined to agree with you still it would be interesting to see what it does to the system when installed. on the otherhand why do you need an app like this to be portable...download it, install it, let it do its thing, and uninstall it if don't want to keep it on the target machine. perhaps portable for apps like this means keeping the install file on a usb

I've been attempting to make some anti-spyware and anti-virus portable to aid in my infestation cleanup toolkit arsenal (c)

So far I've managed to successfully Thinstall, with registry settings and file settings set to Full everything else set to Merged.

Spyware Terminator
Super AntiSpyware
ASquaredFree

With some quirks from
AntiVir7 (only scanning works)

and the unsuccesful would be..

AVG AntiSpyware (service errors)
AVG AntiVirus 7.5 (service errors)
Ad-Aware 2007 (service errors)
WindowsDefender (won't even run)

Ad aware is not portable now?
I have 6.2 (Quite old..I didn't use it for 1.5 year) and it doesn't need any modifications.
I wonder if definitions format changed since then.

My arsenal of anti-malware programs includes:

Thinstalled
Anti-Malware
Ad-Aware 2008
Avira AntiVir
Kaspersky AVP
NOD32 Anti-Virus
Trojan Remover

Portable
ClamWin
HiJackFree
Spybot S&D
Avast Virus Cleaner
McAfee AVERT Stinger
Dr. Web CureIt
Multi-AV
Portable Anti-Virus
RogueRemover

All payware has been bought and paid for and I have a valid license. I was able to Thinstall them using a trial of the Thinstall. Using a sandbox technique, I can update the programs and any modifications to the app are saved to a folder in the same directory as the Thinstalled app.

Thanks - this is useful summary of portable virus & malware software - any chance you could indicate which are payware/shareware/nagware/freeware and a few comments about your experiences - ease of use, effectiveness and so on.

I know this could be a lot of work so any extra information, even if partial, will be gratefully received. :)

Thanks again!

Anti-Malware - Shareware, there is a free version. One of the best anti-malware programs I've ever used. Easy to use and highly recommended.

Ad-Aware 2008 - Shareware, but there is a free version. Also one of the best, but slow scanning. Easy to use and also recommended.

Avira AntiVir - Free version, one of my top three antivirus programs. Easy to use, recommended.

Kaspersky AVP - Freeware, but meant more for the highly notorious viruses. Not meant for portable use but my version works good.

NOD32 Anti-Virus - Payware, good but there are better antivirus apps that are free.

Trojan Remover - Payware, meant for trojan removal, such as Trojan.Downloaders and other malicious trojans. Recommended.

Portable
ClamWin - Free and Open Source, recommended. Very easy to use.

HiJackFree - Freeware, never actually had to use it but I have it just in case.

Spybot S&D - Free, not all found malware is bad but meant more for toolbars and other malware that you can see on your computer.

Avast Virus Cleaner - Free, meant for viruses and worms. Works good, not sure if you'll ever actually need it.

McAfee AVERT Stinger - Free, same as Avast Virus Cleaner and meant for more specific viral infections.

Dr. Web CureIt - Nagware but barely, works real good. Not updated as often as it should be but works.

Multi-AV - Free, combination of several different command line scanners from various companies like McAfee, Symantec, etc.

Portable Anti-Virus - Free, not realy needed, other antivirus software is better

RogueRemover - Free version, meant to detect malicious programs that you install for one reason but the app is really bad and corrupts your system.

But not very good - doesn't find a lot.
